"you can figure it out from the book." Jack said as he picked up the bowl of soup.

‘Ugh, fine, I’ll read the book,’ Mildred huffed, looking back down at her food.

"it's a good book." Jack said as he ate his soup like a sad Victorian child.

‘Why can’t you just explain it to me though? And stop looking so depressed, your life isn’t over,’ Mildred said.

"I don't want to say my atrocities out loud. I can at least pretend not to be king haggard." Jack said dramatically.

‘Come on, you’re just being melodramatic,’ Mildred said, spooning some soup.

"would you say I was being melodramatic if that book allows you to go back to the human town?" Jack said in a rhetorical way.

Mildred frowned. She thought for a moment before answering. ‘I don’t understand the question,’ she said. ‘How could a book let me go back to the human town? You said it yourself that it wouldn’t be safe for either of us.’

"sending someone back is difficult but there must be some way. Maybe if you went with Frederick you would be safe from persecution. You would tell the king you were set upon by faeries." Jack said.

Mildred raised an eyebrow. ‘With Frederick? And I don’t think the king would care much for a peasant, anyway.’

"Frederick would get off Scott free for being missing since he's a noble and if you follow him you can claim the bounty for bringing Frederick back alive." Jack said.

‘What are you saying? I doubt a bounty price could put me in a house with food,’ Mildred said.

"I figure it could get you something. I could give you some of the golden tableware we have made with gold from the river." Jack said.

‘I…. I don’t know,’ Mildred admitted, looking down. ‘Can you give me a while to think about it, please?’

"of course. I was being brash." Jack said. He finished the soup in his bowl.
