‘You’re not gloomy, just a bit emo. Are you guys always in a state of mourning, or do you have fun every once in a while?’ Mildred asked.

"we have our fun moments. You're currently the kingdom's newest source of joy." Jack said. He opened an ivy covered door and flipped a switch. All the lights in the garden turned on. They were tinted blue to fit the gardens nighttime aesthetic.

‘Don’t flatter me,’ Mildred said, following him into the garden. She looked around, fascinated. ‘Wow.’

"it is true. If the ruler is moping then the kingdom gets gloomy but I haven't had time to mope around ever since you came to my kingdom." Jack said

‘What, so the kingdom can just tell when you’re not moping?’ Mildred said. The idea of being the “joy” of the kingdom made her nervous for some reason.

"my moping spreads slowly throughout the kingdom and so does my joy. First the palace staff is affected then they bring the sadness or happiness of the day home and then the people in their homes spread it to their friends until the whole kingdom sustains the feelings of the palace

Mildred nodded in understanding. ‘Right,’ she said. ‘And yet I thought I annoyed you,’ she said with a teasing smile, nudging him with her elbow.

"just a little bit." Jack said jokingly. He walked through the garden stopping by a field of clovers that was covered with moths.

Mildred rolled her eyes, but chuckled. ‘That’s fair,’ she said, following him.

"fun fact, I actually grew these clovers back when I was 300 years old. They attract moths that I thought would help me in my research. They didn't but they look stunning in the clover fields." Jack said.

‘That’s cool,’ Mildred said, looking at the clovers. ‘Is 2000 years for vampires, like, 20 years equivalent for humans? Like do you have a maturity of, like, a three year old when you’re 300 or are you just a really, really old man? And why do you look, like, 25 at the most when you’re 2000? How are you not wrinkly and have grey hair?’

"vampires never really end up wrinkly unless by some miracle we get to be 1 million years old. We only start to look thirty when we're 30000 years old. 2000 is about when we become adults in our society, in our families you're considered old enough to leave home at 3000 and until vampires reach 1600 we mature like humans but through 100 year time periods. I'm told this makes baby vampires hard to handle and for your last question, I already have white hair which is even worse." Jack said with a chuckle.

‘That’s weird. So when I’m an old lady, you won’t look a day over 25!’ Mildred said. ‘That’s insane! And your white hair looks fine, shut up.’

Jack laughed. "I'll be looking like this for years. Maybe someday you'll grow taller than me. When you become an old lady, can you tell me what it feels like to actually be mortal?" Jack asked sincerely.

‘Ugh, I doubt it. Old ladies get shorter, not taller,’ Mildred grumbled. She looked up at him as he asked that question. ‘Yeah, sure.’
