Florence scratched his head with one hand.
-
‘C’mon, something probably just fell and launched dust everywhere,’ Collins said. ‘Do you want to go to your room?’
-
"sure. Dust isn't great for humans." Florence said. He looked through the dilapidated halls. His wings drooped.
-
‘Yeah, it’s not,’ Collins said, stepping forward. She coughed into her elbow. ‘Jeez, what happened while I was gone?’
-
"a subsection of the roof fell. Dust spread further. It just happens sometimes." Florence said. He looked down at his feet. Recently, slowly, he'd gotten a little disappointed in the hospital he lived in.
-
‘Damn,’ Collins said, looking up at the ceiling. She kicked a piece of glass away. ‘Have you ever thought about relocating? There are a few other abandoned buildings around.’
-
"I couldn't think of much for awhile. When I lost the heart I stopped thinking very much at all." Florence said, feeling the carvings in the box
-
‘That’s… right, okay. Well, do you want to? I’m sure we can find one that’s in better condition for you to stay. And we won’t have to risk the bad researchers coming back and hurting us,’ Collins said.
-
"people live there. I think most people don't like me." Florence said. He reminisced on some of his interactions. The fear in the zoo custodian's eyes
-
‘Well, it’s not that they don’t like you, they’re just… cautious since you look, um, different,’ Collins said, trying to make it sound like it wasn’t a bad thing.
-
"that man at the zoo seemed scared of me. They have the right to be scared. If I lose my heart then I end up as mean as everyone else here." Florence said, looking at the dilapidated hallways.
-
Collins watched him for a moment, then sighed and followed his gaze. ‘Well, they don’t really know you, then,’ she said. ‘People are just scared of what they don’t know.’
-
"I'm glad you're not scared of me anymore." Florence said. He noticed a few small shards of glass coated with silver. He remembered that glass. He remembered Collins pulling that glass out of his hands when they met.
-
‘I’m glad too,’ Collins said quietly. She looked back at him and handed him Fred. ‘We’ll find a better place for you eventually. And I don’t think you’re mean, even without the heart. Just… hurt.’
-
"I get mean when I'm hurt. maybe everyone does. Did you ever get mean after you got hurt?" Florence asked as he gently squished Fred.
