Florence gently pet the bird with his index finger and mimicked a shrill grackle call at it before it flew away. Florence trotted to his bed and pulled out a box from under his rusty hospital bed. He opened the box and revealed a small collection of small shiny things. Most of it was coins but he dug into the box and pulled out a different item. A small pendant of a mermaid. It was dirty and a little bit green, but Florence seemed ecstatic about it.

Collins looked over his shoulder inside the box, then looked at the pendant. ‘Wow, it’s beautiful. And they brought you all this?’ Collins asked. She hadn’t believed the “birds love shiny things” thing until now.

"yes. I got this one from a fish crow. I don't see them very often but they like saying hi." Florence said. He mimicked the call of the fish crow which caused the grackles to make a sort of laughing sound

‘That’s so cool. I should do some research on that,’ Collins said, examining the pendant.

"I'd love to know where they go." Florence said as he stared at the pendant. He ran his thumb over the tail, which he seemed to be very interested in.

‘I’ll bring my laptop tomorrow so we can do some googling,’ Collins said, smiling. She’d never been too interested in birds, more in insects.

Florence seemed chuffed to learn more about birds. "They're like me, like the lady on the pendant." Florence said, mimicking a cardinal call

'How so?' Collins asked.

"the birds fly, and they mimick people like I do. And the lady is an experiment like me. Half human half animal and she has weird skin like me." Florence said. A finch landed in the window

‘Mermaids are old sailor tales. I’m not sure how they came to be, but it can’t have been naturally,’ Collins said and shrugged, looking back at the pendant.

"I like that everyone thinks they're cool. Sometimes I wish I was a fish experiment instead of a bird experiment." Florence said. He mimicked the finch at the window which seemed to scare it

'It would've been cool if you were some kind of amphibian. Then you could live in the water and be free from this place without getting caught,' Collins said. 'But I think your bird stuff are cool too.'

"actually, Moses can breath underwater. He's a pufferfish." Florence said, scratching his wing a bit.

‘I wonder why the others haven’t left yet? You’re here because of the creator, but it seems like the others don’t have the same feelings about him,’ Collins said. ‘You could easily fly off to, like, the other side of the continent and live in a rainforest, y’know.’

"everyone loves the creator too much to give up possibly seeing him again." Florence said, looking through the box of treasures. He took out a rusty key
