"it's illegal?" Florence questioned. He mimicked a bird outside
-
‘Yeah, I’m pretty sure,’ Collins said. ‘Especially without consent.’
-
"oh" Florence said nodding. He pulled at some new feathers to pick off the cartilage
-
‘Y’know, we could get this place shut down,’ Collins said. ‘With the proof of the vat and the weird torture machines. Especially the extractor thing I nearly got pushed into. And the experiments that can talk could be witnesses. We could get the assistant researcher arrested and better places for you guys, if the authorities are willing to listen.’
-
"do you think they'd listen to us? They'd never listen to me and... I think the idea of my existence seems wrong to all of them." Florence said
-
‘If they don’t listen to us, they’ll listen to Holly. Shes older,’ Collins said. ‘Florence, I don’t think you were meant to exist. If this place had never opened, you’d be a normal human. They took away your chances at a normal life, I think that’s worth jail time.’
-
Florence showed no expression. He drew his knees to his chest and stared at the floor. He felt like he was on the verge of tears, but he knew he couldn't cry. He might have hated looking like a monster and being feared, but something in Collins' statement made him upset. 'i don't think you were meant to exist.' the words made him feel like he'd stepped on a sea of broken glass. But, as upset as he was, he didn't want Collins to know she'd upset him with that. He knew she wasn't trying to be mean, but it still made him upset
-
Collins frowned slightly. She realised the potential meaning in her statement and faltered. ‘I mean, you would’ve never been anything but a human if they hadn’t done that to you,’ she said quickly. She didn’t say anything for a moment, just shuffled so she was sitting next to him. ‘You okay?’
-
"I don't even know what that human side of me was like. What if I wasn't like me?" Florence said as his eyes started to get misty
-
‘Even if you’re not human anymore, I like who you are,’ Collins said, looking at him. ‘You were probably nice when you were human.’
-
"why choose me for the experiment if I wasn't some mean kid." Florence said. He started scratching little drawings into the concrete with a rock.
-
‘Maybe you asked for them to give you wings,’ Collins said, remembering the folder they’d found in the creator’s room. ‘Maybe they lied to you that it was safe.’
-
"who would believe it was safe? Actually I probably did. I've always been a little stupid." Florence said as he continued to scratch drawings into the concrete.
-
‘You’re not stupid. You’re actually really smart,’ Collins said, picking at one of the bandaids on her hands. ‘I think anyone could’ve believed it was safe.’
-
"would you have believed it was safe?" Florence asked, looking away from his drawing with unsure eyes
