Valako started leading Jonah to the stream pointing out small things about the forest. "Fun fact," Valako said touching a large tree covered in what looked like pom-poms, "this forest actually has a lot of leftover animal traps on account of the fact that it used to be a registered hunting ground." There was the occasional story in town of old hunting traps being what actually hurt people in the forest, but there was only a few people who believed that
-
“Woah, that’s super cool!” Jonah said impressed. “Are they still functional?”
-
"unfortunately yes. A lot of people get hurt in this forest because they walk into these old traps. I'm good at avoiding them because my mom made pathways around the forest. Other people aren't so lucky. I try to help them but when they see my face they usually panic. Even when I have my veil on. They say I look like a ghost with it on." Valako said
-
“I’m sorry.” Jonah said, careful not to get caught by a trap.
-
"it's fine. In a weird way, I understand their fear more than the other teens fear of me. Those people in the hunting traps are trapped and they don't know what's going on. They don't know who I am or what I'm doing. The other teens though, they actively come here to see me. I can't complain though. In a way, I like to pretend they come here because they're like my friends." Valako said
-
“Well you have someone coming as a friend now.” Jonah offered. “And I get that, even though I’ve never been in a situation like that.”
-
"thanks. You're a really great person Jonah and a great friend so far." Valako said. She never felt as happy as she did in this moment. For the first time in her life she had a friend. Straight ahead the stream was coming into view along with the serene small waterfall.
-
“You’ve only known me for a day,” Jonah pointed out. “You’re the great one.”
-
"I've only known you for a day, yet you accepted my facial deformity and never called me a monster." Valako said setting out a picnic blanket.
-
“You’re not a monster, just…, different. People in this town are just jerks for not admitting that.”
-
"Difference is hard to accept. People will lie and say they're good with change but the world hates people who are different. I don't remember where I heard that quote but I think it applies in this situation" Valako said as she sat down on the picnic blanket.
-
He nodded. “Makes sense I suppose.”
-
Valako took out five plates from the picnic basket and five forks. She set them all up carefully then took out the pie and ice cream. She cut the pie into eighths.
-
Jonah waited grab a smaller piece of pie and a scoop of ice cream. “Thank you.” He said, grinning.
-
"You're welcome." Valako said taking two slices of pie. She'd hoped the pie turned out right because she tried a slightly different recipe today. This was because she only had yellow apples which weren't the best for pie
