Jonah waved at the woman again.
“Hi, sorry for my friends.” He said, motioning offhandedly to the group. -
"Jonah, don't talk to her." Sally hissed. "Hello children, I couldn't help but hear you talk about the monster." The lady said smiling. All the other children looked at her with fear and disgust
-
“Yes-apologies for that, by the way. My friends over here still believe monsters exist- I blame the movies.” He tried to sound formal and polite, which only earned more glares from his friends.
-
"the monster does exist though, do you want to meet her?" The lady said, waiting a bit before laughing. "She's not so bad, just ugly as a dog." The lady said laughing more. George glared at the woman with hatred in his eyes
-
“George, will you stop looking like this woman is your worst enemy?” Jonah hissed. “It’s not doing you any favors.”
-
"She might as well be." George said. "Really that girl ain't so bad kids, she'll make you all sorts of treats if you pretend to be her friend, and I'll give you some of my award winning clam chowder, minus the lard." The lady said as she dug something out of her pocket. She took a handful of jolly ranchers from her pocket. "Here's a treat for you kids for listening to me!" She said. "Why don't you go live back in the woods with your monster, Frankenstein?" James said to the woman
-
“Shut up!” Jonah whispered, covering James’s mouth before he could say anything else. “Thanks for the jolly ranchers!” He said, grabbing a few with his free hand, and offering them to the group. “You guys want some?”
-
"I'm not taking anything from that lady." George said. The lady laughed as she walked away. "Don't you know who she is?" Sally asked. Meanwhile, Valako's pie had finished baking and she'd taken it out to cool.
-
“No, I don’t know anything about this place other than what you guys tell me.” Jonah said, eating one of the jolly ranchers. “What’s so bad about her anyways?
-
"well, they say 16 years ago she made a deal with the devil, and the next year she crawled out of the forest with a demon baby." James said. "In normal people terms that's the beast's mom." George said. "I heard she's cursed." Sally piped in. Valako searched her fridge for ice cream and found it at the back of the fridge. Apple pie was better with ice cream
-
Jonahs nose wrinkled in disgust, but not because of the story, because of his friends. “You guys are horrible you know. You actually believe this stuff?” He didn’t wait for an answer before walking off, out of the store.
-
"Jeez, who spat in his shorts." James said as Jonah left. Valako took her freshly baked pie and the ice cream and put it into a picnic basket. She picked up one of her half masks from the shelf and put it on before looking out of the window. She checked to make sure no one was there to throw rocks before opening her door.
-
Jonah walked over to the forest where the girl lived, sitting down on one of the big rocks.
-
Valako started her walk to town when she saw someone in the forest whose face seemed familiar. She tried to duck behind a tree in case they threw rocks.
-
“I’m not gonna throw rocks.” Jonah said softly, not moving any closer in case it scared her away.
