Jonah looked at the other half of Valakos face, quiet for a moment. “You’re beautiful.” He said quietly, smiling.
-
"don't lie. I am hideous." Valako said slightly opening her eye. This was a new reaction to her face. Not a bad one, but she didn't want to be lied to. Everyone agreed that the other side of her face was terrifying and hideous
-
Jonah shook his head. “Not at all.” He said. “On the contrary, you’re beautiful.”
-
With this string of words, tears fell from Valako's eye. "That's a lie." Valako muttered. She knew it was a lie because she'd been called ugly, and she'd been called hideous, but no one ever said she was beautiful. Not even her own mother thought her face was beautiful.
-
“I am many things, but a liar isn’t one of them. I’m telling the truth, you’re beautiful.”
And Jonah meant it. She was pretty, just not the conventional way, more hidden, almost an internal sort of beauty. -
"no one has ever called me beautiful Jonah, that's how I know it's a lie. If I was beautiful there would be no stones thrown, if I was beautiful I wouldn't live in the woods, if I was beautiful there would be no beast of the forest!" Valako said as she started the cry. It was not fair that he could tell her something she knew was a lie with a straight face. A lie with such honest eyes
-
Jonah placed his hands on Valakos shoulder. “Listen to me, I mean everything I said. I don’t care who disagrees. You’re beautiful.” He said to her, trying to go for a comforting smile. “It’s not a lie, I swear.”
-
She looked skeptical but gave a weak smile. "Well, thank you for the compliment. You're very handsome. Anyways, the pie is gonna get cold" Valako said, putting her mask back on.
-
Jonah blushed slightly. “Don’t put it back on! You don’t need it.”
-
She flinched. "It makes me feel safer. Sometimes kids come into the woods to see me and if I'm not wearing my mask they scream and throw rocks. If I wear my mask it's only the rocks." Valako said
-
“Oh, if it makes you feel safer than go ahead.” Jonas said. “Although that’s still horrible.”
-
"I've grown used to it. I'm sure it happens to other people. Oh, since we probably shouldn't go to the treeline I know a great place in the forest to eat this pie!" Valako exclaimed. The forest was full of places great for apple pie in her opinion but it was always better at the treeline
-
“Ooooo, where?” Jonah stood up, brushing the dirt on his shirt off.
-
"Well, it's a bit out of the way, but past the lions mane tree there's a small stream with a waterfall. It's a lovely spot, and sometimes grape hyacinths grow around the edge." Valako said
-
“That’s so cool! Let’s go!”
