Valako recognized that voice and that phrase. She peaked out from behind the tree. "Hello again." She said waving.

Jonah smiled waving back. “Hi. You don’t mind if I talk to you, do you?”

"I don't mind!" Valako shouted excitedly. She smiled, half of her face obstructed by a light purple iris decorated porcelain mask. She got this mask for a Halloween party, she didn't get to the house before the rocks were thrown. She was happy the mask wasn't broken

Jonah laughed. “That’s a pretty mask.” He said, motioning to the purple mask that covered half of her face. “I don’t think I ever introduced myself. I’m Jonah.”

"Well, it's nice to meet you Jonah, my name is Valako. I know it's weird, my mom told me with how unique I am I should have a unique name. You have nice hair" Valako said. She would admit she was a little strange but she hoped she wasn't off-putting.

“Thanks, you have a pretty name.” Jonas said, smiling. “It has a nice ring to it.”

"thanks, my mom said her doctor recommended it. I don't know if it was a joke or not but either way, I've grown to appreciate it. Oh, that reminds me, I baked a pie, it's apple, would you like some? I should warn you it contains eggs, dairy, nutmeg and gluten." Valako said being careful to include all ingredients that could be allergy related.

“That sounds amazing.” Jonas said with a smile, standing up.

"great, I also have some ice cream with it because in my opinion Apple pie tastes better with ice cream. Normally I like to eat at the treeline but since you're joining me it's probably not a good idea. The other kids in town could see and you could get hit with stray rocks." Valako said. It was true. The treeline grew dandelions that she liked to pick and sometimes stray pets would walk up to keep her company at the treeline before the other kids in town saw her and threw rocks

Jonas frowned. “That’s horrible. I don’t care if I get hit by any, but it’s just straight up awful that you have to worry about that kinda stuff.”

"it's okay, I'm used to it. You wouldn't understand because you haven't seen my face. It makes sense everyone throws rocks when they see it." Valako said. She reached up and touched the mask where an eye was painted on closed. There was no eye under that. She wondered what it would be like if she had two regular eyes

“Try and help me understand then, because it makes no sense why people wold throw rocks at you, no matter what you look like.” Jonas insisted.

"... Promise you won't run." Valako said tracing the irises on her mask. She was scared of removing it. It usually was met with a rock or a scream. Some people ran. Some people froze.

“I won’t.” Jonah promised, smiling.

Valako closed her eye tight with fear as she pulled off her mask showing the terror she knew as her face. The skin was darker and more swollen. She was shaking in fear at how Jonah would react. Everyone reacted differently.
