"my mom would never give me enough money to get as many snacks as you do Jonah." Sally said. Valako started to make some dough for the day. She likes to bake something each day as a treat.
-
“It’s called babysitting for money. Or as I like to call it, having a job.” Jonah said, laughing.
-
"I couldn't do that, some kid would end up dead." George said. "You think too much about death." Sally said. Valako set out a pie tin and started looking for ingredients in her kitchen to make a pie or a quiche. She found some apples.
-
“Seriously though, what’s with that?” James asked, looking to George, and by then they were at the mall.
-
"death gives me enough to think about so I think about it." George said shrugging. "That makes no sense." James said holding open the door to the dollar store. It did smell like old latex, and the inside was painted an unflattering yellow color. There were around three other people inside. Meanwhile Valako was crossing the crust of her pie carefully.
-
“Ew, they should get the walls painted sometime.” Jonah said, picking the paint off of one spot. “It’s not a great color, and it’s peeling. Not a good combo.” He grabbed a Kit Kat and payed for it before meeting up with George.
-
"y'all, check this out!" George shouted holding up a few bags of aquarium gravel he'd just bought. "Is it almost that time?" James asked George. "Just about. It'll wait though. After all, it's not like it's going anywhere." George said. Valako stuck the pie in the oven and looked out of her window
-
“What’re you guys gonna do?” Jonah asked nervously. “What’s the gravel for?”
-
"we like to store up on the stuff to keep the monster out of town. Sometimes it'll try to leave the forest from 1-3 pm so around that time we go there to drive it back into the forest." James said
-
Jonah glared at James. “That’s sick, you know that? Absolutely horrible.” He took a bite out of his Kit Kat, not saying anything more.
-
"what's your issue with it? That thing is a monster. I've seen it at the edge of the forest with hands covered in blood. Sometimes, people crawl out of the forest all beat up. Probably because of the beast." James said. "I'm too scared to be around whenever it's near the treeline. I've never seen it and I don't want to." Sally said.
-
Jonah scoffed. “It’s just a girl, maybe a year older. Wouldn’t be the first time James’s been scared of a girl.” He teased. “You guys are getting all worked up over nothing.”
-
"ain't no girl I know of that has one eye. Look at Sally. She's a girl and she's normal. The beast couldn't be a girl because girls are pretty. That thing is the ugliest thing I've ever seen." George said. A strange disgruntled woman started to watch them from across the street
-
Jonah noticed the woman watch them and gave a tiny wave.
“She’s still just a girl.” He protested, feeling more disgusted by his friends every second he spent with them. “Just, with no eye. Hardly any different than Sally.”
“Don’t compare me to that monster.” Sally huffed. -
"it's more than just the eye. You obviously haven't seen it's face." James said. The disgruntled woman approached the group. "Oh god, it's coming over here." George said
