Jonah laughed along with his new buddies as a couple kids ran out of the forest, yelling about a monster.
“What’s all this about a monster anyways?” He asked after everyone stopped laughing. -
Valako walked back to her hut and put the mask on the wall. She took a cookie from the basket and ate it. She could use something sweet after the same old experience. "You don't know about the beast?" James said. James threw the rock earlier. He lived around and hated the beast as long as he lived. "It lives at the edge of the forest and I heard it eats people. Especially if they go in the forest."

Jonah laughed. “You guys seriously believe that? Grow up, there’s no such thing as monsters, I’ll even go in the forest and prove it.”

"it's your funeral. The beast will tear you apart. Don't say we didn't warn you. Also it's afraid of light so that's how you can get it to go away." James said. "You should totally go at night!" Sally said. Sally moved in 7 years ago and feared the beast all 7 of those years. Valako put back on her veil. She looked out of the window at the town. She wondered what it would be like if she looked like them. If she looked normal, she wondered if she could visit a bakery, or a theater. It was a dream if she ever thought of one.

“I’ll go at night, it doesn’t matter anyways, monsters DONT EXIST.” Jonah insisted, rolling his eyes. “It’s probably just a wolf or something, scary sure, but not a MONSTER.”

"you wouldn't see that if you saw it like we have." James said. "It looks human from behind but when it turns around, and you see what it really is, it sends you running." George said. George was James's best friend. He sometimes swore he'd take down the beast but never followed through on it. Valako wondered what it was like to watch a movie on a big clear screen. Did things look different? Was it a better experience? She has no idea

Jonah still didn’t buy it. “I’m telling you, it’s just your nerves getting to you!” He insisted. “Y’all should really stop watching horror films.”

"what else is there to do here man? The city was probably full of stuff but here we've just got the strip mall and the warren theater." James said. "also the Library if you're a nerd." George said. He picked up a rock and threw it to the forest for good measure. The rock landed at the treeline.

“Don’t do that’s you might hit an animal.” Jonah said. “Or worse, a kid looking for a monster. And besides, the library isn’t too bad, you just don’t like it because your mom makes you go every weekend.”

"ugh don't remind me. That place is more boring than watching paint dry." George said. "Probably because you suck at reading." Sally said. Valako saw the rock from her window. From the shade of the forest she picked up the rock. The veil obstructed her face as it always has. She was at peace with her isolation, but it still hurt.

“Whatever you guys, I’m headed to buy some candy, wanna come?” Jonah asked, though he looked at the forest. He could’ve sword he saw something-or someone pick up a rock. Probably just George’s stories getting to him he supposed.

"totally! I'm gonna buy some energy drinks so I can watch the beast hunt. If you want I could even go in with you to watch your back, and get the jump on that monster to finally kill it." George said. "You're never gonna catch it." James said. Valako examined the rock and turned it over in her hands. She then carried it back to her cabin

“No need to join, I’ll take a photo of it to prove it’s NOT a real monster, now does that sound?” Jonah said as he walked over to the candy store to pick out some Reese’s.

"sure, but let's up the stakes." James said taking a few energy drinks from the store fridge. "You gotta stay in the forest for a full fifteen minutes, and we'll wait at the treeline for you" he tossed a Pepsi to Sally. "We'll call the cops if you don't come back in an hour." Sally said

“Fine, although there’s no need to bring the cops into this.” Jonah agreed, and grabbed a bottle of Coca-Cola and a couple chocolate bars, paying for it in cash.
