"Exactly. What perspective do you have? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but you don't seem the type to look through rose-tinted lens," Ander said with a light chuckle.
-
Kenna thought for a moment. "I'm not sure. It's easier to figure out other people than it is myself. The two of them had now entered the cabin.
-
Crypta was just wiping her hands with a towel, looking up at the two. "No luck?"
"Actually, we did catch something," Ander said with a coy smile.
"Hopefully not a cold, considering you're both soaking wet and dripping water on my floor," Crypta said, dropping the towel on the counter. "Where is it then?"
"Where is what?" Ander replied innocently.
"The thing you caught!" Crypta said, somewhat impatiently. "You said you caught something."
"She should be arriving shortly. Robo's playing ad a babysitter. You wouldn't mind more company, would you?" Ander said, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
"Andy," Crypta said crossly, as if she was a mother scolding her child. "How many girls do you intend to bring to my house?"
"No offense to you, of course," she added, giving Kenna an apologetic look. "But I'm not really accustomed to having company." -
Kenna let out a chuckle. "Don't worry," she said. She sat down in one of the chairs. "Although Ander, I do wonder how all your friends are girls, I haven't seen a single guy be friendly to you."
-
"Well so far you've only met one man who knows me. Unfortunately, he had to be dealt with in a rather unsavory manner," Ander said with a grimace. "This may shock you, but I don't have a great wealth of friends."
"That's because you were a show-off," Crypta snorted. "You were Linnus' favorite and a top student, therefore you were an arrogant little prick."
"Oh Crypta, you flatter me," Ander replied sarcastically.
"The only way you could gain his respect was to beat him, which I did," Crypta replied, flipping her hair.
"And still you continue to mention it after all these years," Ander said, taking a sip of his coffee. "Look who's a show-off now?"
Crypta waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, whatever. The boys all hated you because you were competition, but you were an object of absolute fascination amongst the girls. I don't know what they saw."
"My dashing good looks and skill, perhaps?" Ander said with humor.
"If you hadn't buried yourself in your work and focused on something other than your training, maybe you would have found out. Although there was that one time..." Crypta drifted off.
"Almost, Crypta," Ander said with the trace of a smile. "But not quite."
The conversation was interrupted by the door flying open as Lilac stumbled in, Robo at her heels. She blew a strand of hair out of her face. "Missed me?" -
Good looks and skill was pretty accurate, the sudden thought entered Kenna's mind. Suddenly her thoughts reeled from shock. Did she really just think that?!! Well there were more things, his kindness, determination, the fact that he was helping her through all this, his smile, his singing...
Kenna mentally slapped herself to reality. What was wrong with her?! Why was she thinking these things?! Was she...No, she wasn't. She shouldn't be. This wasn't a situation for strange feelings to arise.
She smiled as Lilac came in, glad for a good distraction from her out-of-place thoughts. -
"You were gone for only a few minutes," Ander responded, setting his mug of coffee back down on the counter. "Hardly enough time to miss you."
Crypta made a sound that was a mix between a squeal and a squeak, running over to Lilac and crushing her in a tight hug. "I haven't seen you in years! Where have you been?"
"Busy doing missions, obviously. You're going to break my ribs," Lilac laughed, patting Crypta on the back and returning the hug. "I missed you too."
Ander's gaze shifted from the happy reunion to Kenna, surprised to see a flush of colour in her cheeks. It would be awkward to question it, but he couldn't help but wonder what had put it there.
Once Crypta had finally let go, Lilac made her way over to Ander and took his cup of coffee. "Yoink. Your reflexes aren't what they used to be."
He blinked a few times, only now realizing that Lilac had stolen his coffee. "What?"
She looked at him, then Kenna, then back at him and taking a long sip of his coffee. "Ohh. Were you distracted?"
"Shut up. Give me my coffee back," Ander said, holding his hand out for it.
Lilac took a defiant step away, taking another sip from the mug. "No. It's my coffee now."
Ander got up from his chair and lifted Lilac off of her feet which made her squeal, kicking her legs in protest. "You nearly made me spill it! Put me down!"
"Give me my coffee and I'll consider it," Ander replied, holding his hand out to her. She paused for a moment, before downing the entire mug and placing it in his hand.
"Oh, you're gonna regret that." Ander tickled her sides, making her convulse with laughter.
"Stop! Stop!! I give up," Lilac wheezed. "I'll pour you another cup of coffee or whatever. Get off me."
Ander obliged and dropped her back on the ground, where she quickly made her escape so he couldn't pick her up again. She stood next to Kenna, her arms crossed.
"Isn't he so annoying?" she huffed, although it was clear that she wasn't actually irritated in the slightest. "All that over a coffee." -
Kenna watched the interaction with a big smile on her face. It was really nice to see him act so natural with somebody, she loved seeing him like that. It was obvious that he and Lilac were extremely close, and she didn't mind it, she thought it was great.
Kenna laughed at her remark. "Well at least it wasn't me," she said with a grin. "I'd rather not be tickled to death like that. Besides, he'd probably end up getting punched in the face if he did." She was extremely ticklish, and because of that whenever it happened her limbs would go flying everywhere. People had learned the hard way not to tickle her, otherwise they'd get a good accidental smack in the face. -
"I'll make note of that," Ander commented, pouring two cups of coffee. "I'd prefer to avoid getting clobbered as much as possible, thanks."
He held out one of the cups to Kenna, keeping the other for himself. "Coffee?" -
"Thanks," Kenna said as she took the warm mug from him. She wasn't a huge fan of coffee but she wouldn't refuse if offered to her.
It surprisingly wasn't too bad. She could easily get used to this stuff. She glanced at the clock and let out a small laugh. "How many cups of coffee do you have a day? It's 11 and this is your second or third one." -
"Second," Ander corrected, blowing on his coffee to cook it down. "Since I barely got to have that other one before Lilac guzzled it down, this still counts as my second cup of bean juice for today."
"I think his last record was what, seven in one day?" Lilac guessed.
Ander had a somewhat guilty expression, sheepishly taking a sip of his coffee. "It was eleven, actually."
Lilac looked at Kenna, shaking her head. "Boys."
"Weakling. I've done thirteen," Crypta called out from her place by the cupboards, slicing up a pie. -
Kenna was doing her best to surpress laughter at Ander's confession and Lilac's comment. She then turned her head towards the kitchen. "Yeah, but you probably spend day and night working on your intentions," she pointed out to Crypta. She looked up at Ander with a smile on her face. "What's your excuse for eleven cups a day?"
-
"Precisely. My blood was probably so caffeinated that if a mosquito bit me, it'd die on the spot!" Crypta said cheerfully, plating the generous slices of pie she'd just cut.
"I'm surprised you didn't die on the spot," Lilac said with a sigh. "Am I the only one with any self preservation here?"
"You hardly get to talk! You were the one who poisoned yourself to "see how fast it would kick in" and nearly died," Ander scoffed at Lilac, redirecting his attention to Kenna. "Oh, you know. Studying, training, all that nonsense. Such little time and so much to do." -
Kenna shook her head, starting to actually wonder what was going on with them. Coffee was one thing, but actually poisoning yourself! "What other strange antics were you guys upto?" she asked. She stood up and made her way to the kitchen to grab a plate if pie.
-
"We were young and stupid. You'd be surprised at the things people like that will do," Ander replied sagely.
Lilac searched Ander's expression, somewhat disappointed when she didn't find what she'd been looking for there. "Now we're just old and stupid."
