Lilac nodded, saying nothing further. When the silence grew too long, she spoke up again. "Got any family?"
-
Kenna nodded. "My dad - er, well, adoptive dad if you want to get technical." She thought for a moment before saying, "I wonder how he's doing right now."
-
Lilac frowned in thought. "You have a dad? Does he know about all of...this?" She shook her head. "Never mind. Of course he doesn't." If he did, he'd probably be dead.
"...What's it like? To have a dad?" -
Kenna gave Lilac a soft look at that question. "It's hard to explain," she said. Especially since she didn't want to compare it to not having a dad. But there's not much of a way to do that. "For me, I always had someone who cared for and supported me. He's always been there for me when I needed him most and when I didn't. But that's my experience. Other people out there have terrible fathers who don't care a wink about them. I was lucky enough to have one who does."
-
Lilac was quiet while Kenna spoke, listening attentively. "That sounds nice," she said after a moment, her voice soft. "I wondered what it'd be like, to just be a kid. I tried to give my younger sister that, but it wasn't really the same, you know?"
-
Kenna nodded, seeing how that would be. "What's your sister like?" she asked out of curiosity.
-
"A pain," Lilac admitted with a sheepish grin. "She's really headstrong and likes doing things her way. Her name's Iris and she's pretty faithful to Linnus. She's good though, they've just sunken their claws into her. I haven't told her yet, see. About this whole rebellion business."
Lilac fiddled with her thumbs to have something to do. "I wanted to tell her my thoughts, but Ander told me not to risk it. That it was too dangerous. We used to talk about it, late at night when everyone else was asleep. We'd sit on the rooftop of the bunker for hours," she recalled. "Saying the stuff we didn't dare say under daylight."
She looked as if she were about to say more, but stopped herself. "Good days. Some better than others." -
"I think she should be proud to have a sister like you," Kenna said. Lilac risked a lot to try and have and give other people a semblance of a normal life. "You're a very admirable person."
-
Lilac tucked a loose of strand of hair behind her ear, smiling a little. "You really think so? I hope she is."
"You know Kenna, I would've been proud to have you as a sister. You're tough. I like that." -
Kenna let out a little laugh. "I was thinking the same thing. Like the big sister I never had."
She glanced back towards the cabin. "I'm going to head back. Do you want to come with or stay out here a little longer?" -
Lilac sighed. Good things never lasted long. "I need to head back before anyone realizes I was gone. Still, it was nice talking to you."
She gave Kenna a two fingered salute. "See you around." -
"Bye," Kenna said with a wave, then turned to head back to the cabin.
When she came back inside she told the other two, "Lilac's left." -
Ander had been fixated on a device, turning it off when Kenna came and lifting his gaze to hers. "I thought so. She's still an active member." He leaned back against the couch he was sitting on with a sigh. "This whole ordeal is...complicated to say the least. Still, it could be worse."
-
Kenna crossed her arms in thought. "What exactly are we going to do?" she asked. "We can't really fight them off, but we also can't just wait for it to all blow over."
-
A neatly packed bag was resting next to Ander as he shoved the device inside. "Crypta is trying to relocate you as we speak. You'll have a new identity. A chance for a fresh start." He flipped the bag's flap closed, fastening it with a button.
