(Aw poor Lilac)
Kenna took a plate of freshly baked pie and a fork and made her way back to her seat. She immediately took a bite, not waiting for it to cool off, and was hit with instant regret for that action.
Her mouth felt like it was about to burn off with how hot the pie was, fresh from the oven. She tried to breathe through her mouth to lessen the burns the food was giving her, trying to chew as quickly as possible to remove the scalding hit piece from her mouth.
She swallowed, took a breath, then said, "I think I should have waited for it to cool off." -
"Probably. Don't worry, it's not going to run from you," Ander laughed, his eyes bright as he looked at Kenna.
Lilac looked between the two, stretching her arms and yawning loudly. "I'd love to stay and hang around, but Linnus will wonder where I am. What do you want me to report back to them?"
Another pleasant moment between Kenna and Ander had been spoiled by Linnus, leaving the latter with a feeling of disappointment. He put his empty coffee mug in the sink, the cogs in his brain turning. "I'm not sure. Because if you say I found her, they'll wonder why I'm not with you. But if you say I haven't, I feel like they'll grow suspicious." -
Kenna thought for a moment. "Maybe you could say that you weren't able to find him? That way it's neither confirmed nor denied that he's gone rogue."
-
Oi that's my line))
"Could be, but they'd likely suspect that I'm evading them." Ander was silent for a few moments, his fingertips touching and forming a steeple shape. "Unless we tell them that you're already dead." -
"That would be risky," Kenna said. "But it's probably the best choice we have." It was the best way to go off the radar, to say that she had been eliminated. But if Linnus found out, it would be deadly.
-
"You'll never be able to fool Linnus if they catch you with her!" Lilac scoffed. "This whole thing is far too risky."
"Do you have a better idea?" Ander said, a slight edge in his voice. "Because we don't have a lot of options here."
"We need a fool-proof plan. Pretending she's dead...that's never going to work."
"The only foolproof option we have would be to kill Kenna. Is that what you want?"
The room went quiet, Ander's unwavering gaze fixed on Lilac. Crypta wisely chose to remain silent.
Lilac paled. "No, I...come on, Ander. You know I wasn't saying that."
"Then it's decided. I killed Kenna and attacked Charlie because I thought he was going to sabotage the mission," Ander decided with finality. -
(So I'm guessing Charlie survived)
Kenna silently let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Not from fear that they'd change their minds and get rid of her, but just from the sheer intensity of the situation.
She realized she had probably done more harm than good. Her knocking on Ander's door in the beginning, all if this stemmed from that. Now everyone else here were fearing for their lives too because she had simply wanted to survive.
There was nothing that could have been done about it, though. She had every right to want life rather than death. She was grateful Ander had decided not to kill her. But right now she felt like an extra piece that no one knew where to put yet. -
Well they haven't confirmed his death yet so he very well could be))
Lilac stared at Ander for a few moments, her arms crossed and her eyes filled with hurt. "Fine. I'm going to get some fresh air. Crypta, wanna come with me?"
Crypta nodded, picking up two plates of pie and strolling towards the door. "I could use some. Ander, don't get into trouble while I'm gone," she said with mock stern in an attempt at humor. It fell flat, so after a few moments she cleared her throat and left with Lilac by her side.
Ander pressed his fingertips against his temples with a frustrated sigh, a weary expression on his face as he stared at the closed door. "Sorry that you've gotten dragged into all of this." -
"Then I should apologize for being such a matter of controversy," Kenna said. "Which isn't exactly my fault, nor is me getting dragged into this yours. Nothing about any of this could have been helped."
Kenna let out a small sigh. "I can imagine this is all really hard for you. Not only does everything we're doing go against every law of self-preservation, but because of that people you care about could get hurt." She glanced out the window at Lilac's frustrated form. -
Ander's gaze moved from the door to Kenna, unspoken emotions lying behind his jade green eyes. "I suppose I am afraid. I'm afraid of what they will do to Crypta, to Lilac, to Robo."
He paused, silence stretching between the two for a few moments. "Mostly, I'm afraid of what they will do to you." -
Kenna blinked up at him in surprise. That didn't make sense. He had known Crypta and Lilac for longer and he was closer to them than he was to her and most likely cared for them more.
"Can I ask why?" she hesitantly asked, leaving it up to him to answer or not. -
"Crypta's knowledge and ability in the tech field makes her invaluable to Linnus. It's unlikely that they would kill her. Lilac is an incredibly skilled assassin. She could be replaced, but they'd most likely punish her rather than kill her," Ander explained.
"But if they get their hands on you, I don't know what they'll do. That scares me." -
Kenna wasn't sure what to say. She couldn't reassure him that everything would be alright because it wouldn't. Even if all of them lived they wouldn't come out without a scratch. And a scratch would probably be an understatement.
"I'm scared for you guys too," Kenna said. "I know you basically just gave out the probability of each person surviving, but I wasn't expecting so many people to be willing to risk their lives. And me who's not experienced with this stuff, I can't help but be afraid that someone's going to die." -
"That's what people do, Kenna," Ander said kindly, his voice gentle. "Die. It's inescapable. We might as well die for an honorable cause."
Ander smiled, although his eyes still held the heaviness of one who made many difficult choices. "You symbolize rebellion. Linnus wants you dead and yet here you are, alive." -
"No thanks to you, of course," Kenna said, her facial expression showing her sarcasm. "You know I'd be dead in a ditch if it weren't for you."
