Kenna couldn't figure out what Ander had done to make Lilac upset. Yeah, you could describe him as an idiot sometimes, but it was usually purposeful, only meant for fun and not to harm anyone.
"What happened?" she asked. -
Lilac leaned against the side of a cottage. "Old stuff. Doesn't really matter anymore." She smiled to herself. "For a top rank assassin, he has the emotional awareness of a brick. You're lucky, you know."
-
Kenna had been thinking about what to say to empathize with Lilac. She looked at her in surprise and confusion though at her last sentence. Her? Lucky? How? "What do you mean?" she asked her.
-
"I mean the way he looks at you..." Lilac's cheeks turned pink from discomfort. "Never mind. It's stupid."
-
"The way he looks at me...? Oh!" Kenna then realized what was going on. Lilac had feelings for Ander didn't she. Was she the girl Ander and Crypta had mentioned before?
Kenna shook her head. "You don't have to worry about that. Even if I did have feelings for him, there's countless reasons why it would never happen." -
"No, no, it's fine! Old stuff, remember?" Lilac exhaled heavily. "This just got really awkward, didn't it?"
-
Remember? They hadn't talked about this before. Perhaps a slip of the tongue, perhaps she was reminding herself that it was meant to be in the past.
"It's alright," Kenna smiled. "There's no shame in it." -
Lilac said "old stuff" before which is what I was referencing but yknow what, that works too lol))
Lilac smoothed her hair back, putting it up into a messy bun. "How did you end up on Ander's door? I can't imagine why Linnus would see you as a threat..." She bit her lip, wondering whether or not to speak of her suspicions. Are you hiding something? -
"The park empties out into the forest," Kenna explained. "I was taking a walk when I realized someone was following me and I ran then stumbled upon Ander's house. We later found out that guy was Charlie."
-
"Charlie," Lilac repeated, toying with the hilt of her knife. "Now there's one dull nail. He was good for one thing though. He was a tattletale. The only thing you could rely on him to do was rat you out to the higher-ups. He was never popular."
She moved her hand away from the knife, choosing to cross her arms and drum her fingers in a repetitive motion instead, unable to keep still. "So, did you kill him?" -
Kenna shook her head. She stared off into space as she spoke. "I was scared when I found out Ander was supposed to kill me too. He started acting like he was going to bring me to Linnus and I ran. Ander stabbed him when he started chasing me, and after he got me back he said he wasn't sure if Charlie would die from it or not."
-
"So he might be alive?" Lilac paled. "You know what he'll do if he gets to Linnus, don't you? Even with Ander by your side, you two are no match for them. They're going to come for you again, Kenna. This time, they won't let you slip past them again."
-
"I know," Kenna said as if it hurt her. She wrapped her arms around herself. Lilac was voicing all her own worries about this being a fruitless battle. "I know," she whispered again. "But I can't just die without trying to live."
-
Lilac gave Kenna an apologetic look. Perhaps she'd spoken too much. "I'm sorry if I upset you. But you must understand the gravity of the matter." She patted Kenna's shoulder reassuringly. "You've vaded them this far. That isn't a small feat."
-
"Thanks. And I'm sorry I kind of overreacted," Kenna said. She looked at Lilac. "I just don't want to lose hope."
