Kenna had been about to open her mouth for her second theory, but at Ander's words, didn't speak. "Do you think we should go back up?" she asked. She felt like that moment had been tainted with their talk of Linnus.
-
Ander nodded silently, wishing he hadn't mentioned Linnus. Why was Linnus invading every good thing in his life? He almost felt contaminated by it. It was only as he headed back towards the shore when he realized something was wrong. The forest, which had been filled with lively chatter, was now quiet. But worst of all, Robo was nowhere to be found.
-
Kenna grabbed her cane, then flipped her head over and began wringing the water out of her hair. She felt a strange nervous feeling in her gut but she didn't know what it was from. Flipping her head back so that her head wasn't in her face, she looked around, trying to identify what was unsettling her. She didn't see anything amiss, but it looked like Ander could tell something was wrong too.
And then it hit her. "Where's Robo?" she asked. -
"I was just wondering," Ander replied, his voice quiet. He looked down at the soft earth, seeing paw prints deeply sunken in. He wrung his shirt out, looking at the prints with a wary look on his face. "It could be that he left to Crypta, but I don't know why he would go so suddenly." Another realization struck him.
"The birds aren't singing," he said with a tone of dread. "Stay low. I don't think we're alone out here." -
Kenna did as he said. She wasn't sure what was going on. A small seed entered her mind. What if it was nothing? What if they were just being paranoid? But the thought was quickly rushed away by that gut feeling.
-
A horse of a deep brown colour stepped out into the open, bending its neck down to reach the grass under its hooves. Its ears pricked up when it saw the two, turning to look at them. Ander's hand hovered next to his ray gun, feeling uneasy.
-
Kenna straightened up in confusion. A horse? Where would a horse have come from? Why was it here? Who did it belong to?
-
Without warning, a knife was pressed against Kenna's neck, another against Ander's. The steel of the blades glinted cruelly in the sunlight, pressing so hard that they nearly drew blood. "Hand away from the gun, Ander," a familiar voice said, quiet and demanding. The rider from the night before.
Ander was tense, coiled up like a cat ready to spring. He reluctantly complied, moving his hand away from his ray gun. He knew that voice. He knew that voice. Suddenly, it hit him.
"Not funny, Lilac." -
Kenna let out a sharp gasp as a cold knife suddenly touched her neck. Her whole body tensed in fear. She didn't know what was going to happen.
Her eyes widened when Ander knew who the person was. Someone from Linnus. Someone who wouldn't be afraid to hurt them. -
For a few tense moments, no one said anything. Then the silence was interrupted by laughter, the blades moved away and slid back into their sheaths. Lilac's eyes shone, pulling off her hood to reveal vivid purple hair that was slowly fading to a light brown. "You don't miss a beat, do you?"
"Fortunately, I don't," Ander said, rubbing his neck. "Was that really necessary?"
Lilac shrugged. "It was fun. Care to explain why you were slow-dancing in the water with your target?" -
Kenna immediately moved away from Lilac, not trusting her even if she was on somewhat friendly terms with Ander. Thoughts were rushing through her head. If this Lilac had no chance of taking their side she could die and Ander could get in serious trouble, maybe even get killed himself. She didn't know what could happen.
-
"How do you know that? That's private information," Ander replied with a frown. Robo trotted out from behind Lilac, happily panting and pressing his cold nose against Kenna's cheek.
-
(Ok exactly how big is robo, they're standing)
Kenna leaned back from the dog, then looked at Robo. Dogs were a way to read the situation, but Robo seemed completely at ease. Was he unable to tell because he was mechanical? Was everything actually ok?
"We were in the middle of the river in plain sight," she commented quietly, loud enough to be heard by both of them, but quiet enough to be missed if they didn't need to hear from her right then. -
Wait I thought they like crouched down to get out of sight))
I suppose he could go on his hind legs))
Robo had his paws on Kenna's shoulders, standing up almost as tall as she did. He set them back down on the ground, spinning around in a circle while happily chasing his tail.
"Linnus wanted me to check up on you. Their face in you has been dwindling," she replied, raising an eyebrow. "They notified me of your target and the fact that Charlie was attacked and left on the forest floor. Got anything to say about that?"
Ander's jaw was set, searching Lilac's face. "I don't like competition," he replied. "He was getting in my way when I had everything under control. If he'd never been there, I could have delivered her right into their hands."
"So why haven't you?"
The tension between the two was heavy, their eyes locked.
Ander crossed his arms. He would have to take a risk. "Because you and I both want the same thing, but Linnus doesn't. Giving Kenna to them won't change anything."
Lilac's eyes went wide, clapping her hand over Ander's mouth. "Are you crazy??" she hissed. "Out loud? Here? That's treasonous to even speak of, Ander!"
Ander moved Lilac's hand but didn't let go of it. "Lilac, it had to be said. I can't just watch anymore, because even if I leave, there are many more to take my place. You used to agree with me on that. What happened?"
Lilac tried to tug her hand out of Ander's grasp. "Ander, let me go."
"Not until you tell me the truth. Are you on their side now? Or are you still on mine?"
"Don't make me hurt you."
"I'm not afraid of you, Lilac. But I'm afraid of what you might have become."
Lilac was silent for a few moments, before exhaling with frustration. "Fine! Fine. I'm on your side. But surviving in Linnus is harder than ever. They're cracking down even harder on the rebels. I have to do what needs to be done for my survival."
Ander let go of Lilac's hand. "Was that so hard?"
She glared at him, rubbing her wrist sulkily. "Yes, since someone could have been watching and coming to turn us both in."
Ander laughed. "You know they don't have the resources for that. They've been busy lately, haven't they?"
"Yes, but how do you know that?"
"I'll explain later. Lilac, this is Kenna," Ander said politely. "Kenna, this is Lilac. She's an old friend of mine. We trained together."
"I know her name, Ander. I read her file."
"You could at least try to be mannerly. Would it kill you to stick to pleasantries?"
"Being nice never got me anywhere," Lilac sighed, finally holding her hand out to Kenna for a handshake. "Sorry I almost killed you." -
(I don't know. I feel like Robo isn't Great Dane size though
I always imagine him being a bit bigger than my dog)
Kenna hesitated before putting her hand in Lilac's. "I understand," she said. She didn't like that she had nearly been killed. It had scared her out of her wits. But she couldn't blame Lilac for doing it.
