Kenna felt like he needed a hug, but she felt like he wasn't exactly the huggy type. So she just wrapped an arm around his shoulder. She was silent for a moment before cautiously saying, "What would you say to the thought of, once this whole thing is over, we start new lives? Ones that we want to live? Where we have at least a good amount of control over what happens to us?"
-
Ander tensed up when she touched him, his immediate instinct being to twist away from her grasp and put her arm in an arm-hold. He caught himself before he could, forcing himself to push the thought aside. He chuckled, gently brushing away her touch and closing himself off. "That's what I've been trying to do, but it hasn't really worked out for me. I'm not sure if it'll ever be over. But if it were..." He let himself dream a little. "I'd want a house by a lake. Not just any old house, it'd be a house I'd made with my own hands. Cozy but big enough for a small family."
-
(Ooh a family?)
Kenna was rather unfazed when he moved her hand away. She had been hesitant to do it and he had just confirmed her hesitations. She smiled at his idea. "That sounds really nice," she said. "Calm and peaceful. I suppose you'd make friends with the squirrels and rabbits as well?" -
Ander and his family of therapy stuffed animals))
"Nah, I'd eat 'em," Ander said with a mischievous grin. "Ever had squirrel meat before? They're as good as any other. As for rabbits, they make a good stew. I'd take good care of a family, if I could ever convince a woman to marry me." He chuckled, letting the leaf in his hand blow away. "What about you, Kenna? What are your plans?" -
"I have to say I've never had either," Kenna smiled in return.
She thought about his question for a moment before answering, "I haven't exactly thought that far ahead. Before, I was thinking about a decent house in the city, but I do like it here in the woods. Or maybe I'll just hire a warlock and have him magic me to a fantasy land in one of my books or something." -
"That's an interesting thought. You could go live in your favorite books, literally an escape from reality. So you believe in magic then?" Ander seemed vaguely interested, but also seemed slightly amused as if entertaining a whimsical idea.
-
"No," Kenna shook her head. "But who doesn't like the thought of magical powers?"
-
"It would certainly be an interesting concept. I like to believe that science is magic in a way. Then again, I was never much of a scientist either. If you could have any sort of magical power, what would it be?" If you'll kindly imagine Ander doing something remotely interesting because I've run out of things to write regarding him, the author would be very much obliged so she doesn't have to write "Ander chuckled" for the umpteenth time.
-
(XD oh no )
"The classic question, huh," Kenna said. "Probably flying. Then I wouldn't have to walk."
Kenna didn't care to continue the conversation of superpowers, so silence fell between them. But it wasn't exactly awkward, at least not to her. Maybe more...uncertain. They were still learning how to handle each other, how to act with one another.
A thought came to her. She wasn't sure if she should speak it aloud or not. But she decided to. "To what we were talking about before...I think if the time came you'd be a great father."
Before he could reply, she grabbed her cane and struggled to her feet. "Shall we continue training or go back?" -
Kenna's words had been brief, but the effect they had on him was lasting. Ander. A good father. Yes, he had mentioned a family, but the thought of ever being a father was something he found deeply troubling. What if he failed and turned into the man his own father had been? Or what if the child should fall into Linnus' clutches? The family in the house by the lake was his dream, and for his sake and theirs, it must remain just that. A dream, a longing that could never be a reality.
"You've learned the basics of handling and shooting a gun. That's probably enough for today," Ander said, getting back onto his feet. -
Kenna followed him as they returned to the house. She wondered what Crypta was doing while they had been gone. Either inventing or baking, most likely, but what else did she normally do?
-
Crypta, however, was nowhere to be found. She seemed to have simply vanished and yet there was still Robo, who was sprawled out on the hard wood floor, pawing at the air. When he saw Ander and Kenna, he got to his paws with a huffing sound, his paws making a clacking sound on the floor as he made his way over to them. Although his face was not built to provide much expression, his glowing eyes had a look of pure annoyance as he pouted about being left alone.
-
"Where's Crypta?" Kenna asked. Her mind immediately went to down that hallway she'd been told not to go down
-
(accidentally posted early but I suppose the basic info I there)
-
Ander didn't seem very alarmed by her sudden disappearance. "Probably tucked away, making some sort of oddity."
Robo made another huffing sound of offense, head-butting Ander's leg.
"I mean, er, invention. Not oddity. A very cool, very interesting thing," Ander corrected.
Robo seemed more satisfied by this definition, trotting back over to Kenna and promptly sitting himself on her feet.
