WHY DO I KEEP FORGETTING SHE NEEDS A CANE))
Ander's expression was one of uncertainty, but he eventually nodded. "Whatever gives you the best balance and core strength. Now arms up and level." He guided her arms with his hands, gently lifting them up. "Keep the gun steady. Even breaths." -
(She blends in well lol)
Knowing that, Kenna immediately leaned over to her left leg. She hadn't realized she was off center, but now that she had leaned over, she was right in line with the target.
"You know I'm going to have to learn one-handed," she commented, trying to get the nerves out of her body before she actually shot the gun. "Although this is a good just in case, I'm not going to drop my cane every time to shoot." -
"I understand that. But if I had you shoot for the first time with only one hand, it wouldn't go very well," Ander said with an amused chuckle. "Better to get used to the feel of it before getting too far ahead of yourself." He checked her posture and grip, pushing her a little to see if she'd wobble or stand firm.
-
She stood stable. After a few moments Kenna realized the only thing left now was to get over her nerves and pull the trigger. And so she did.
Kenna let out a sharp gasp at the burst of sound that came from the gun. She nearly staggered back from the force of it, but she managed to stay in place. -
Ander grinned, giving her an affirmative pat on the back. "That was good! That was really good. You missed the target, but you didn't fall over and you held your ground. Shall we try again?"
-
"Sure," Kenna said. She let go of the gun with one hand and moved her fingers around, then did the same for the other one. She felt like she might knock her joints out of place if she did this long enough.
She hadn't moved from her original position, so she raised her arms again the same way and shot again.
They continued training with the gun until Kenna insisted she needed to sit down. -
Ander sat down next to her so she wouldn't feel left out, the springy moss providing a comfortable seat for both of them. "You did good, Kenna. You should have seen my squadron's first time training. I mean, there were little kids soaring across the practice room!" He laughed, until his laughter turned into a melancholy sigh. "It was fun. This was too."
-
Kenna noted that there were a few good memories he had from Linnus. She wondered what more he had.
"You found it fun watching me nearly fall backwards every time?" she said with a grin on her face. -
"Oh, immensely so," Ander replied with a bright smile. "You did well for your first time. Think you're getting used to it? Or is it still a killing machine?"
-
"Well I think that tree is going to have a grudge against me," Kenna said. She was unsure. It was a machine that was designed to kill. Ander was right, though, it did depend on the person. But they were up against an organization which likely had a plethora of guns who did have the intention to kill.
"Do you know if there's others like you?" Kenna asked. "Good people in Linnus?" -
"I think carving into it with a knife probably puts me high on its hit-list. I've never fought a tree before." He seemed optimistic about his odds against the gnarled tree, probably envisioning himself taking it down with nothing but a large saw and confidence.
When Kenna questioned whether or not there were good people in Linnus, he suddenly became very interested in a leaf he'd just found. He looked up from it after a moment, looking back at her. "Well, that's a hard question to answer. It depends on what you mean by good." -
"Well I mean, you're good," Kenna said. She wasn't sure how to further elaborate. It's hard to exactly verbalize what good means.
-
Ander bit the inside of his cheek, looking at the gnarly tree. "Am I, really? I abandoned the people I pledged my loyalty to. I've killed people, some of whom were likely innocent. I run away from my problems instead of facing them. No Kenna, I wouldn't say I'm good. There are a lot of good people in Linnus who do terrible, terrible things."
-
"But they're still good," Kenna said, going of his last sentence. "They don't let the terrible things they do ruin their humanity. They still feel guilt for things they do and try to do what's right whenever they're able. Just like you. Besides, if you were evil, I doubt Crypta would let you within two hundred feet of this place."
-
Ander let our a frustrated sigh. "No, they don't know or understand that what they're doing is wrong. That's the real issue." He let the leaf fall, catching it in his hand before it escaped his grasp. "Crypta is a good person, but the things she's made? It'd make your blood run cold to see what they've done. Why do you think we've buried ourselves away in the woods?"
