Ander listened to her story, feeling pangs of sympathy for her. He knew what orphanages could be like. The way she talked about it felt all too familiar. Maybe he had more in common with Kenna then he thought. Before he could stop himself, he began to talk.
"You know I...I had a dream once. Stupid, really," he said with a somewhat nervous laugh. "But I had it for a while. I wanted to build an orphanage, but not like the one I went to. I wanted it to be different. It'd be everything I would have wanted back then. As I said, kind of a stupid idea. But that didn't stop me from thinking about it." -
"I don't think it's stupid," Kenna said. She wondered what it was that he would have changed about his orphanage, but she wouldn't ask. "Besides, it's nice getting lost in your head every once in a while. It puts a buffer on the horrors of life. Plus, a lot of dreams are goals. I've dreamt that I wouldn't be crippled. And while that problem probably won't get solved, you're going to teach me how to be more functional on my feet. Not in the way I expected, certainly, but it's something. And I'm sure some of the things that you wished for your orphanage to be like in your dream, the things that still mean something to you, at least, maybe some of those things have already happened because you wanted it to and so you made it happen. And if not, maybe those things will happen in the future. You deserve it, anyway."
-
Ander adjusted the collar of his shirt to further cover the Linnus tattoo in his neck, averting his gaze. "I believe that I'll be getting what I deserve soon enough," he responded vaguely. A bullet through the head, no doubt. He continued to walk, hoping to preoccupy his mind with other thoughts. "Do you think that people get what they deserve in the end?"
-
"I do," Kenna said. "The unfortunate thing is that the majority of the time they don't realize that it was because they deserved it."
-
Ander nodded at Kenna's words. He looked around the forest with a content sigh, feeling at peace and in his element. This was where he belonged, with the woodland creatures and trees. Not in the brightly lit Linnus compound, not in the bustling villages nearby. He preferred the quiet. It made him feel alone, but that wasn't entirely a bad thing. It made him appreciate Kenna's company more, every second precious because it wouldn't be long before he was on his own again.
"Kenna, where will you be going?" he inquired politely. "With a false identity and some money to help you along, I imagine you could go wherever you'd like." -
(for some reason I just rememberdd the RP with Harper and how the cabin they were trying to get to was Ander and Kenna's and my reaction to that like sgdkspdhc they got married)
Kenna blinked multiple times, not ready for that sort of question. She tried to rack her brain for a moment, but no ideas emerged "I don't know," she eventually said. "I've never really thought of where I'd go if I couldn't live around here. It's something to think about, I guess."
(I find it funny how she's walking with Ander with messed up bed hair because she hasn't had a chance to go talk to Crypta to get breakfast and clothes and stuff) -
SAME I was like msjks they are together did they have a family we dunno but they built a house together))
Man I almost forgot about Harper))
For some strange reason, Ander felt his heart skip a beat. She wanted to live here. Here, in the woods where she'd nearly died twice. He tried not to grin at the irony of it. Maybe in a nicer world, they could have been neighbors here. They could have shared a cake and some coffee now and then, talking about how the rabbits had been nibbling at their gardens lately and how the massive, mutated centipedes had been nibbling at the rabbits. The thought made him oddly happy.
He shrugged his shoulders, daring not betray his whimsical thoughts to her. "You must have had a life before all of this happened. Maybe you could have that again. What was it like?" -
(Wow Ander really misunderstood that lol
The forest would have had to be somewhere near the city she lives in otherwise she wouldn't have stumbled across his house.
Dreamer boy)
(Also Ander spared her life five times, not two. Once when he let her in, twice when Charlie showed up in the stables, thrice when Ander decided he wouldn't kill Kenna, four times with the giant bug, and five times when they were chased on horseback.)
Kenna noticed how his demeanor changed ever so slightly. She could tell he did his best to hide it, but she could tell by the way he seemed to walk a little lighter and a happy glint in his eyes. What was he thinking about that made him so happy and lighthearted?
Kenna thought about the conversation they'd been having. And she remembered how he had pushed her away when she suggested he have a secret identity too. Could it be that he wanted to be rid of her? Well, she really was an inconvenience, he had put his neck on the line for her too many times.
But that didn't sound like the Ander she knew. But I
reality, did she really know him? She wasn't sure. Either way, even after so little time of knowing him, she felt like he wouldn't do something as malicious as that.
Kenna pushed her disheartening thoughts and sad feelings away. Instead, she gave him a smile. "Living in a dingy little apartment infested with mold and bugs?" she pointed out. "I'd rather not." -
Good heavens my brain is broken))
To be fair he only directly saved her life from immediate danger with Charlie and the centipede, but I guess you could say he'd saved her life about four times since saying that you won't kill someone doesn't really count as saving their life))
"There's always a bright side to things if you look for it," Ander commented optimistically. "Or at least, so I've been told. For example, you could say that your snug living quarters were also the home to an ecosystem of fauna and flora. It sounds almost charming. I'm sure there were some things about your past life that you enjoyed." -
(I mean I suppose that depends on the context. I mean me saying I'm not going to kill you isn't me sparing your life, I wouldn't have any reason to take your life. But if someone had a gun to your head and then decided not to pull the trigger, they're sparing your life. Ander had a reason, and he considered doing it, but he never actually threatened her. So would that count?)
Kenna laughed. "I never quite saw you as the optimistic type," she said. "Not that it's a bad thing, of course. You just seem more of a realist to me. Maybe a touch pessimistic."
Kenna thought. "I had a dog," she said. "We didn't leave her behind or anything, she got sick and died a few weeks ago. But she was a good thing." -
Ehh, well he never actually put her under any sort of threat so but he was supposed to kill her, I guess it's debatable))
"That's because I'm not optimistic," Ander chuckled at Kenna's words. "Although I do have my moments, when I'm in a good mood."
He frowned sympathetically when Kenna talked about the dog, breathing out in a heavy sigh. "Yeah, we don't deserve dogs. They're one of the few things that'll love us even when we haven't earned it." -
(Four and a half times, then)
"Yeah," Kenna nodded. "Besides that, I don't know, I enjoyed reading? Also singing, although I'm not any good at it. I guess those were the things that made life a bit more enjoyable." -
Four and a half times works))
Ander's eyes lit up with a slightly manic energy when she mentioned reading. He read almost everything he could get his hands on, hungry for knowledge and the advantages it could give him. He had spent his childhood before the orphanage poring over books in the community library, getting lost in worlds much more exciting and pleasant than his own. If all of those people could have happy endings, he could have a happy ending too, couldn't he?
"Reading is good. I used to spend a lot of time reading. Still do, but I have other things to take up my time now," Ander replied. "I'm sure you're a pretty good singer. It just takes practice, right?" -
"I guess so," Kenna said. She felt happy when she saw his eyes light up at the mention of reading, the same way he did at the mention of horses. "What book genres are you mainly interested in?"
-
"Anything, really," Ander replied, speaking at a slightly quicker pace like he did when he got excited. "Poetry, instructional manuals, novels, cereal boxes...if it has words then I'll read it. Do you have any preferences?"
