"Uh, yes you do.” Veronica tilted her head to the side slightly, raising one of her little eyebrows. "You could say no to my invitation.”
-
Tessa was confused. So, she looked at Jacob. "What's a tea party?" she asked him wondering what on earth she was going to get herself into on the chance she accepted the girl's offer.
-
Jacob sighed as he felt compelled to answer the question. “It's basically where Verona holds a little party of her own with tasty cookies and cakes as well as tea.”
-
"Oh," she said. "Oh but I have to get fitted after breakfast," she said. "I can't do anything that takes too long."
-
“How about right after you get fitted?” Verona said, trying to be like her dad and bargain for whatever she wanted.
“Verona, quit it.” Jacob snapped. -
"But I'll still be full from breakfast," Tessa said. Given how grand the meals here were, she didn't doubt that she wouldn't be hungry an ounce until quite a few hours after.
-
Verona lowered her eyes to the ground, sad. “Oh, okay then. I suppose I’ll have to kick at the pebbles on the pavement for the remaining day.”
It was clear the little girl was trying to guilt trip Tessa into having a tea party with her. -
"Verona, you forget that I basically have to care for a bunch of girls your age and some older and some younger. Trying to guilt trip me is not going to work," Tessa said.
-
Verona stared at Tessa in confusion.
“Guilt tripping?” She asked.
“It means when you try to make someone feel bad because they didn’t do what you wanted.” Jacob explained. He crossed his arms across his chest and gave his little sister a reprimanding glare. “Which is what you were doing.” -
"Well anyway, let's go down for breakfast. I'm curious what it is this morning," Tessa said. She started walking in the direction she was pretty sure was the way to the dining room.
-
Jacob quickly sped walk towards her and placed a hand on her shoulder, using his other hand to point in the opposite direction.
“It’s that way, actually.” He said in a matter-of-fact voice. -
"Oh sorry," she said. She felt kind of bad that they were having to guide her everywhere. Granted, there was no point in her memorizing where everything was if she was going to leave so soon.

Jacob noticed her solemn expression, his eyes softening in pity. It must be hard, after all. Having to be without parents sounded absolutely heartbreaking. Despite the lack of his father’s presence, Jacob still heavily relied on his father to make things work.
“Have you ever had pancakes?” Jacob asked. -
Tessa didn't say anything but shook her head.
