(No idea lol)
Tessa's eyes widened. She was lucky if she found a quarter on the ground.
Instead of telling her she should be grateful for what she had, she said, "Verona, you can't expect others to give you things when they have no reason to. You'll find that when you're older people won't be as willing to do things like taking you out for ice cream with nothing in return." -
(an endless void)
"If I ask nicely enough then Daddy will!" Verona retorted with a small pout on her face. Getting lectured, even if it was gentle, was not one of her favorite things to be given. She hated being told that she was in the wrong.
As a result, a lip that shook as if it were in the water of snowy Antartica. Verona was a spoiled child who was used to being told that her way was correct and nobody could tell her otherwise.
"Hey, stop it. You're being difficult." Her older brother snapped, tired of her shenanigans. -
"Just leave her be," Tessa said quietly to Jacob. "She'll come around eventually."
-
"No, she isn't allowed to treat a guest like this and she knows it." Jacob snarled. His face had a tint of red faded into it, a sure sign he was losing his temper. "She's a spoiled, immature child is what she is."
"NO I'M NOT!" Verona screamed as she threw herself onto the grass. She rolled over onto her stomach and banged her fists and legs on the ground while screaming bloody murder. Strangers whispered to each other and pointed at both Tessa and Jacob with a disapproving frown on their faces. -
While the other adults who knew what little kids were like were glad that Tessa and Jacob weren't doing anything about the child's temper tantrum.
Tessa finished the last few scoops of her ice cream. "Mmm done," she said. -
Impressed, Jacob offered a gentle smile.
"You seem to have knowledge with little kids. Were there children Verona's age at your orphanage?" -
Tessa nodded. "I do my best to raise them in the areas Miss Javelin lacks knowledge in," she said. Which was pretty much everything considering the children at her orphanage were essentially treated as slaves.
Fear set into her heart. Were they okay? Tessa had done her best to shield all the kids from Miss Javelin's wrath, but with her not there, how would they fare? -
"I see. Do you miss them?" Jacob asked, his voice soft and understanding.
-
Tessa nodded. She would have to teach Jill, who was 14, how to care for the younger kids. She would be gone from the orphanage in about a year, someone needed to take over what she had taken upon herself to do.
-
Verona paused her tantrum and gazed at Tessa with curiosity in her green eyes. Her red cheeks were still puffed out and her nose still let out an occasional shift as she sat crisscross in front of Tessa.
"What did you and the other kids do at the orphanage? Did you ever play games like Tag or Hide and Seek?" -
"Not at the orphanage, no," Tessa said. "We got a chance to during recess at school, but other than that, not really."
-
"No playtime!" Verona exclaimed with a sharp gasp. She clutched the straps of her overalls tightly. "How did you ever entertain yourselves?"
-
"We had lots of chores to do," Tessa answered simply. She felt like she was reaching the limit of how far into her life at the orphanage she wanted to go, but she didn't want to be rude.
-
"Chores?! You don't have maids?" Verona gasped even louder, shocked. It had never occurred to her that not everybody lived a life full of riches and gold.
-
"The vast majority of people don't," Tessa said. "They have to work to make it by."
