"VERONA!!!" Tessa shouted again as she started slowly gaining on the small child. Why were these kids so fast?
-
This time, Verona turned around, only to be enveloped in the caring arms of her big brother.
“What did I say about running off like that?!” Jacob yelled, glaring down at his sister. To a little girl, it would sound like he was angry. But that wasn’t the case.
Jacob was scared.
Terrified that his sister had been taken away.
“Uhm, what’s happening?” Verona asked, her voice a whisper as she looked at Tessa. -
"Next time you want to run off and play with butterflies, first make sure it's okay with whoever's in charge. We were really worried something bad had happened to you," Tessa said, kneeling beside Jacob.
-
“Oh, that’s what happened.” Verona deadpanned, staring at the two of them. “You guys were worried about me."
“How could we NOT be worried?" Jacob sighed, impatient with the little girl.
“I don’t really know,” Verona shrugged. “But the butterflies were keeping me safe. Please don’t worry about me! They're my protectors."
"Stop talking nonsense. Those flying critters are just a bunch of fancy insects.” Jacob snapped. -
Jacob," Tessa said with a little bit of an edge in her voice to tell him that if she wanted to believe that butterflies protected her, she could.
"Sometimes the butterflies have their limits, though," Tessa explained. "We need to be there in case something bad happens. -
“But what if you guys are busy?"
“Then you ask some other trusted adult. Heck, ask Palino for all I care!” Jacob exclaimed. He let out a shaky breath, getting on his knees to come to Verona's height. “Just don't… scare us like that. Okay?” -
As Verona nidded a response, Tessa sighed. "Let's go," she said. "Hopefully we still have some ice cream waiting for us."
-
Verona sniffled and gripped onto Jacob’s hand tightly as the three of them walked back to Palino’s ice cream cart.
“Ah, you have come back! Yes? Well, good thing the ice cream has not run away!" Palino chuckled loudly. -
Tess smiled at him. "Thank you," she said as she took the ice cream.
-
Jacob handed Verona an ice cream before taking his.
“Would you guys like to sit somewhere underneath a tree or something? The weather seems just right for an ice cream picnic.” Jacob asked. -
"Sure," she said. She waited for Jacob to lead the way since she didn't know where the park was.
-
Jacob led the group of three to a spot under a redbud tree.
“This is our favorite spot to sit and eat ice cream at!” Verona told Tessa, excitement gleaming in her eyes. -
She nodded then sat down. She took a bite of her ice cream and her eyes widened. "Oh my goodness..." she whispered.
-
“How does it taste?” Jacob asked, trying to hide the small smile that threatened to curl up his lips.
-
"Amazing! I've never tasted anything like it before!" Tessa started rambling with bright eyes about how good the ice cream was, when she realized that Jacob had had this desert so many times he already knew this stuff.
"Sorry," she mumbled.
