Mr. Ryder raised a questioning eyebrow and leaned back in his chair.
"Take a seat, girls.” He said, beckoning at the two chairs in front of his desk. -
Tessa guided Verona to the chairs in front of his desk.
"Verona, tell him what happened," she said gently. -
"Nothing!" Verona giggled, a cheery look replacing her nervous one. "I just got into a small squabble with Bridget. She can be rather difficult at times, don't you think, father?"
Mr. Ryder sighed and gave her a weary look before placing his hands over his face in defeat.
"Verona," he mumbled. "What have I told you about messing with the maids? If they get upset, they could quit and then tell many people how I have misbehaved children. That I am an irresponsible father who lets his children run as free as a wild horse. It would be unfortunate if that happened. If you please, do stop your messy tricks! It’s getting annoying to hear all those complaints coming in from the maids." -
Tessa blinked. "Verona, you know that's not what happened."
She understood where Verona was coming from. But she needed to learn not to protect the people that hurt her. -
Verona turned around to face Tessa. She gave the older girl a big smile and a slight nod.
"But Tessa, that is what happened. You might've been seeing things." Verona chuckled. -
"No," Tessa said. She turned to Verona's father. "Mr. Ryder, Bridget hit Verona. Something about taking to another maid named Betsy. When I came in I could tell it's happened many times before."
-
Mr. Ryder's eyebrows shot wide open. His eyes twitched in an anger that couldn't be cooled down.
"She did what?" Mr. Ryder growled in a low, dark, menacing voice.
"N-Nothing, daddy!" Verona gasped. "She didn't do anything!" -
Tessa reached over and brought Verona into her lap, wrapping her arms around her. "You don't have to protect her," she said softly. "You don't have to be afraid of her. You don't have to worry anymore. I know how you feel. You're lucky you're able to get out of the situation."
-
Verona stopped replying to anything. She kept quiet. Slowly, she nodded her head in agreement with Tessa.
"R-Right. Thanks." She muttered.
Just then, the door slammed open.
A black-haired male entered the room, his bright eyes wide-open in alarm.
"What in the name of Thomas Edison is going on here?” Jacob asked in shock. -
Tessa glared at him. "One of the maids had been hurting your sister," she said. So much for not being anything like the orphanage.
-
Jacobs's eyebrows shot up in surprise. He quickly recovered and put a stoic expression on.
Don’t look so angry. It wasn’t like I knew that she was being harmed." Jacob snapped. -
Tessa let out a frustrated sigh. She looked back at Mr. Ryder. "Sir, I know I don't really have any evidence besides my word and the mark on her cheek, but something has to be done."
-
"No, this is enough proof.” Mr. Ryder huffed. He gave Tessa an approving look. "Thank you for informing me about this. I'll go tend to that filthy maid immediately."
And with that, Mr. Ryder strode out of the room, leaving the three children in silence. -
Sandy jumped up and rested her head on Verona's lap.
"See, Sandy wants to make things better too," Tessa said, trying to cheer the little girl up. -
Verona sniffed and grabbed the dog's cheeks with her two tiny hands. She pulled the head towards her chest and hugged the dog.
