Warming my heart

“I was always taught to never lay a single finger on a girl. I really do apologize for my actions.” Jacob said once again, wanting to show how much he meant it.
-
"It's okay," Tessa said softly. "Were you close with your mom?
-
“My…. mother?” Jacob certainly didn’t anticipate this question. His voice grew soft, almost hesitant to answer her question. He racked his brain for any memory of his mother, but could only remember a distant, foggy memory. A soft voice, one that sounded like petals gently swaying in the morning breeze. A sweet scent that filled the air, one that smelled like fresh daisies with morning dew on them. But most of all, the comforting aura that promised safety.
Jacob grew quiet.
“No, I don’t remember her at all.” He uttered in a cold tone. -
"Sorry," Tessa immediately said. She was silent for a moment before saying, "Sometimes I wonder if I remember my parents. It's hard, because I was a baby, ten months old, I think, I don't know if they're actual memories or just my imagination wondering what it was like to have a family. Probably the latter. But I sometimes get this one scene in my head of my mom and dad talking and laughing in the small kitchen. She was making supper and he had the cupboards open, I think he was putting away a couple groceries. The place was cramped and small, but they didn't care. They were just glad to have each other."
Tessa swallowed, realizing she had gone on rambling. She looked down at her knees in embarrassment. "Like I said, it's just my imagination. It may or may not have actually been that way." -
Jacob felt his heart clench. That sounded… sad.
He offered Tessa a soft smile. “Well, perhaps it was that way. When we’re young, we remember these small moments in time, happy or not, they get embedded into our heads. Some may be forgotten, but others could remain for a lifetime. Those are the memories our hearts hold onto when we tend to forget everything else.” -
Tessa gave a small, sad smile. "It might not be a memory," she said softly. "But it's all I really have."
-
Jacob lowered his eyes to the book he was reading. He didn’t know how to respond to that.
“Well, even so, even if it’s a vague memory or not, it’s nice to have something to remember.” He said, lifting up his face and smiling at her. -
"True," Tessa said. Changing the subject, she said, "What do you usually do with all the energy built up from so much food?"
-
Jacob chuckled in amusement, shaking his head.
“Don't listen to Verona. I don't really eat as much as what she tells you.” He said, adding on a smal laugh at the end of his sentence. “But I do like to spend my spare time jogging around the gardens whilst listening to some music. And what about you? What do you intend to do with your energy?” -
"I don't know," Tessa said. "I've never felt this much energy before." And indeed her feet were swinging back and forth under her seat. She had never been so well-fed. Her whole life she had always been hungry and malnourished, neither of which were cause for a good amount of energy.

A deep frown tugged down on his lips. He bit the inside of his cheek as he tried to find the right words to say. He glanced over her slim form, noticing just how frail and skinny she was. Was she being starved back at the orphanage? Just what exactly had she gone through in that hellhole? He put on a tiny smile.
"I'm glad to hear that you feel energetic. It's good for us to be energetic at our young age.” He commented, snapping his book shut and putting it to the side, now fully invested in the conversation. -
"Should we go on a walk?" Tessa suggested. "I haven't seen the gardens yet and I'm sure they're lovely."
-
"Of course," Jacob promptly stood up from the seat and dusted himself off despite there not being a single speck of filth on him. Then, he offered his arm to Tessa, a gentle and relaxed smile falling into place on his lips.
-
Tessa smiled and took his help up. The two of them wound their way through the house until they were finally in the back, in the garden.
At the sight of all the colorful plants Tessa's eyes widened. "It's so beautiful" she exclaimed. -
Jacob hummed in agreement.
"Thank you. While we do hire professional gardeners to tend to them, I have planted quite a few myself.”
