Jacob discreetly scooted a few centimeters away from Tessa, not wanting to impose on her space. “This book is about terrifying legends, some said to be true, others not. Are you interested?”
-
"Sure," Tessa said. "Sounds like we're both at least somewhat interested in folk tales."
-
-
“Folk tales?” Jacob scoffed, waving his hand dismissevly at her. “No, more like mysteries about murders and paranormal events. See, this one talks about a haunted doll.”
-
"Legends are folk tales," Tessa said. "Do you like reading about the paranormal?"
-
“Indeed. Have you done any research on paranormal events as well?”
-
Tessa shook her head. "I never exactly had time to explore different hobbies."
-
“Well, it’s a good thing you have all week, isn’t it?” Jacob said with a small smile. “Besides, perhaps something could change in the remaining days. Your stay could become extended for all we know.”
-
Tessa rolled her eyes. "Likely the only reason your father is doing this is because it will look good to the media. He's spoken to me twice since I came here, and one of those was because Verona was in danger. If he was actually looking to adopt me, he probably wouldn't be all stuffed away in his office.
Besides, even if he did, even if he offered to let me stay here as his daughter, if I had a choice in the matter, I don't think I'd accept. It's nothing against you or anyone else here, but the kids at the orphanage need me. I'm really worried about how their doing right now. I hope they're alright." -
Jacob folded the upper corner of one of the pages in his book as a substitute bookmark. He raised an eyebrow at Tessa.
“I’m sure those kids know how to handle themselves. From everything I’ve seen so far, it looks like they’ll be fine.” He said. -
Tessa purses her lips but didn't say anything. She needed a reminder not to confide in other people anyway. They wouldn't understand, they couldn't help.
"Can I ask you something?" she asked. Before he could reply whether she could or not, she said, "What changed between yesterday morning and this morning? Yesterday you threatened me and grabbed me and stuff, but today we're just sitting in the library like two normal people." -
“Well for starters, this is a calmer atmosphere. We had quite a lot of things going on yesterday, so of course it was natural for us to get stressed out.”
-
"I see, so you naturally get rough with people and manhandle them when you're stressed?" Tessa said with a raised eyebrow.
-
“W-What! Of course not! As the person who will inherit my father’s business when he passes, I wouldn’t have such a bad attitude towards people.” Jacob exclaimed, shocked. His book almost fell out of his hands, but he caught it just in time. “Yesterday was just… stressful. I…” He made a strangled sound, as if the words he was trying to say were hard to speak. “I’m sorry.”
-
Tessa stared at him.
He had apologized.
It was a strange thing, hearing someone say they regretted something they did, and really actually meaning it. It was almost something that only happened in stories with how seldom she had seen it.
She looked away. "I forgive you," she said.
