"But...Nathan...it's...you don't...I just..." She ran a hand through her brown hair as she tried to figure out what she was trying to say.

"I was gentle," Nathan protested. "I only gave him little scratches."

"But still..." Megan said. She shook her head and sighed. "Let's go home."

Nathan whimpered and trailed after Megan obediently. "Are you going to hurt me because I was bad?"

"Of course not," Megan said.

"Then what are you going to do?" Nathan said, his ears pinned back and his eyes wide and fearful.

"Just...don't do it again," Megan said.

"Then how do I protect you from the bad people?" Nathan asked.

"I don't need protecting," Megan said. "I can take care of myself."
(Oh no he's going to start questioning his entire existence as a guardian demon, isn't he) -

"But I'm here to protect you," Nathan said, looking sad. "If you don't need protecting, you're saying you don't need me." -
Megan picked him up and walked with him on her hip. "I will always want you near me," she said.

Nathan hugged Megan tightly. He felt better, but he was still upset. If anyone found out that she didn't really need him, he could get sent back to hell and never see her again.

They soon reached home. It was time for lunch. "What do you want for lunch? No cake."

"But I don't know what to eat then," Nathan said sadly.

"There's other things to eat" she said. Something occurred to her. "Hmmm, I wonder how we'll get you food when my parents are back home."
