"So we're going to break in some good habits," Megan said, "starting now. Off the counter."

Nathan whimpered and hopped onto the floor, landing with a soft clack.

"Will they be able to hear you too?" Megan asked.

"Depends," Nathan said, swiping a little paw-like hand over his ear.

"What do you mean?" Megan asked.

"If they're paying attention and listening for it, they'll hear me," Nathan said. "If they aren't looking for it, they won't even notice."

"Oh, that makes sense," Megan said.

"Ye-es!" Nathan said happily. "Can I have cake now?"

Megan nodded and started cutting the cake

Nathan reached out his hands expectantly.

Megan put the slice on a plate and put a fork and handed it to him.

Nathan lifted up the fork and stuck it straight into the cake as a sort of decoration, pleased with himself.

"You use it to eat the cake, remember?" Megan said.

"But hands," Nathan pouted, holding then out. "They're usefuler."
