"But the timer went beep beep," Nathan said.

"It's just a very good approximation of when the cake should be done," Megan said, "It's nothing absolutely definite."

"Is anything definite?" Nathan said.

"No, not really," Megan said. "Except for math problems."

"Ooh," Nathan said. "I like math now."

Megan laughed. "Do you like anything definite?"

"Mebbe," Nathan said, smiling.

The timer was at 1 more minute. Suddenly it rang and Megan turned it off. She opened the oven, and didn't even need to check with a toothpick, she knew it was done. She pulled it out of the oven.

Nathan crawled onto the counter, its slippery marble surface impossible to hold onto with his claws.

"You know you won't be able to skate on counters and such when my parents get home," Megan said.

"Why not? They can't see me," Nathan protested.

"But they'll see if the salt shaker tips over for no reason at all," Megan countered.

"Countered" lol))
"Humans will wave anything away as coincidence," Nathan said. "You didn't think I was a demon when you first saw me, right?" -
"No, I thought you were something quite different," Megan said. "But when things happen for no apparent reason, people start to question their sanity, and what's going on, why did this happen, and so on."
