They arrived back home. Megan put Nathan back down on the ground. "They'll be back tomorrow," she said as she sat down on the couch."

Nathan's eyes shone. "Ooh! Can I see them?"

Megan grabbed a picture frame containing a picture of her with her parents from when she was little.

Nathan took the picture and his eyes examined it with an almost hungry expression. "You all look so happy."

Megan looked at the picture with fondness. "It was a happy day," she said.

"Why was it happy?" Nathan asked, clutching the picture tightly as if he expected it to be ripped away from him at any moment.

"Well I had just gone to my firsr.carnival," Megan said, "and then I found out I was going to have a sister."

Nathan twisted around, as if to see a child behind him at any second. "Where is she? Is she with your parents?"

"No,' she said with a bittersweet smile. "She died before my mom gave birth to her."

"Oh," Nathan said, saddened and disappointed. "Maybe I can go find her if they let me into heaven after this."

Megan looked at him. The pure hope he had in his voice caught her heart. And then if he went back to hell he would be crushed.

Nathan saw something in Megan's eyes, something he didn't like. It was pity. Why in the world would she pity him? He carefully set the picture back in its place, stretching his leathery little wings before blinking expectantly at her. "What now?"
