Megan stood on her tiptoes and reached over his head. "Here," she said, grabbing the box of chocolate cake.

"Wow," Nathan said, his eyes growing huge and round as he looked at it. "Box!"

"You can help me put the ingredients in," Megan said. She thought about that for a moment. "I'll get the ingredients ready for you to put in before you do, though." She didn't want him making a complete mess.

"Okay!" Nathan said happily, his tail swishing from side to side.

Megan got a mixing bowl down and put the cake mix in. She went into the cupboard and grabbed the oil, went into another one and grabbed a measuring cup, and then went into the fridge to get the eggs.

Nathan looked at the package, which had little markings on it. He squinted at them and turned them upside down, trying to make sense of them.

Megan set everything on the counter, then went to preheat the oven. She saw Nathan looking confused at the box. "What is it?" she asked.

"What is this?" Nathan said, pointing to the instructions.

"Those tell you how to make the cake," Megan said. "But I have all the directions memorized. All I need it for is the baking time."

"I can't read," Nathan said plainly, his face so close to the box that his eyeballs were almost touching it.

"You can't?" Megan asked, closing the door to the fridge.

"Why would I?" Nathan said. "There's no point in learning to read in Hell, no time, and no one to teach me."

"Do you speak a different language down there?" Megan asked.

"There are lots of different languages down there," Nathan explained. "Down there, it's more common to speak Hellion."

"What does that sound like?" Megan asked, then realized she probably didn't want to know.
