Collins held Fred in her bandaged hands, looking down at him as he sat. She listened to the sound of the heart, which she was now vaguely familiar with. A few moments of silence passed. ‘Do you want me to… leave?’ she asked quietly, still standing.
-
"you can stay." Florence said, looking at the small red holes in the sides of his arms. He had forgotten how sharp his nails were.
-
‘I can go if you want some alone time,’ Collins said, hugging Fred to her chest. ‘I-I don’t mind.’
-
"I don't like being alone. The hospital is lonely. It's one of the reasons I don't like living here now." Florence said, rubbing his accidentally stabbed arms. The hospital was lonelier than Florence liked to admit. The loneliness got worse when Collins wasn't there.
-
‘O-Okay.’ Collins sat down in front of him, putting Fred in her lap. She watched the heart, not saying anything.
-
"at this time of year, the hospital is cold, and lonely and dark. There's no comfortable beds that other experiments won't fight me for. Sometimes when I sleep in the comfortable beds I get even lonelier." Florence said. He didn't like acknowledging how lonely it was, but he didn't want Collins to leave. Not right now, after such a breakdown. He didn't want to be alone after a tear in his soul broke through.
-
‘We’ll try and get better beds. Maybe I can bring a jumper for you tomorrow,’ Collins said, looking up at him. ‘My parents won’t like it if I try to bring you home with me. I’m sorry, I wish I could help more,’ she mumbled, tracing a circle in the dirt with her finger.
-
"I don't want a better bed. I'll start to miss what I had when I slept on beds like that. I know I can't go into the city." Florence said. He mimicked the heart in a low, sad violin
-
‘You can have both beds,’ Collins said. She tied her hair back into a ponytail and leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky. Today had been a big day.
-
Eventually, the tears stopped rolling down Florence's face. "I'll be happier when you come back tomorrow so... Please come back tomorrow." Florence said, with big puppy dog eyes
-
Collins looked back at him. She gave a small smile. ‘I’ll come back tomorrow,’ she promised. ‘I have nothing better to do.’
