She stiffened at that, and turned to stare at him.
"You wouldn't..You couldn't.." -
Kazuki grinned. He'd found a pressure point. Happy to play along if only to see how far he could take it, he shrugged nonchalantly.
"I don't see why not. You're no fun. You're just mean." -
"I am not! I was being nice to you before you decided to shake my ladder!" She said, then added "I wasn't trying to be mean.."
-
Kazuki played with a piece of grass to show how uninterested he was.
"Maybe you weren't trying, but you're mean." he said, glancing up at her with a pouting look. -
"Look, I'm sorry, okay!" She huffed, look ing away from him to stare up through the branches of the tree at the sky.
-
"Too little too late." he responded in a sing-song voice. "Just you wait til my father gets out of his meeting~"
-
She was close to tears now. "Why are you so cruel? How can you find this amusing?" She muttered, then put her head in her hands and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself again.
-
tell me if I'm going too far, okay?
"Well~" he tilted his head, stripping a piece of grass in half with his fingers before throwing it down and tilting his head. "What can I say? I like to get my way." -
You're fine I'm enjoying this.xD
She glanced over at him, and sighed "I've noticed.." -
operfect~
Kazuki smiled in an overly-pleasant way that looked more maniacal than reassuring.
"Anyway.. Enjoy your afternoon. Things are sweeter when you're at the last bite." he snickered as he stood up, dusting off his pant legs, and started off back toward the door, waving over his shoulder. -
She watched him leave, taking a shaky breath. He couldn't really get her executed, she was almost positive of that...but the way he seemed, even if he couldn't legally get her killed, it wouldn't stop him.
She stood up, brushing the grass of her skirt and began walking to the servants quarters, to the room her and her mom shared. She then remembered Riot, and sighed, turning and starting back toward the library.
Riot wandered the halls, hiding every time someone passed. He sniffed the air, searching for something. -
Kazuki stood outside the grand doors to the meeting hall. The meeting was supposed to be over by now. He sighed, staring at the ground. He wasn't allowed in there. He prepared himself to wait as long as it would take, but the doors swung open just as he made up his mind to do so, and he watched the foreign visitors leave in a huff, stamping off like children down the hall. His father followed, smirking. He paused outside the door and crossed his arms, watching them go.
Kazuki smiled, seeing a chance.
"It went well, then?"
His father jumped, startled, and spun on Kazuki, glowering coldly.
"What are you doing standing outside this door?"
Kazuki shrunk back from his father.
"Oh. Well.. the meeting was supposed to be over, so I was-"
"You do not run my schedule. I do. I will decide when a meeting should be over."
"Yes father. I'm sorry."
"You'd better be. Now if I'm not mistaken, it's time to eat."
Embittered by his father's words, Kazuki considered bringing up the girl whose life he'd threatened. Some form of inhibition stopped him at the last second. He kept quiet and decided that letting her jump every time she heard her name or rush to hide herself when a royal aide came around would suffice. He followed his father as he started off down the hallway. -
Varden stood in the library when she got there, looking worriedly at the fallen books and crooked shelf. He spun around when the door opened, and sighed in relief when he saw Loralei.
She ran over and hugged him, crying.
"What happened? One of the maids heard screaming in here, but when I came the room was empty...are you okay?" He asked at last, gently rubbing her back.
"I'm fine. It's nothing, Riot made the ladder fall..I fell, but I'm okay. I ran out to find Riot. Have you seen him?" She sniffed, looking up at him.
Varden sighed, shaking his head "No, I haven't...but I'll keep an eye out for him. I have to go now, you sure you're okay?"
"I'm positive, dad. You should go, you have work." She smiled weakly, pushing him away.
He left hesitantly, but leave he did.
When he was gone, Loralei walked over and began putting the books back in place, wondering why she'd lied to her dad, why she hadn't just said the Prince did this... -
Having finished dinner with his father in a very tense silence, Kazuki was more than happy to get away from him. Though he thought it'd be cool to go throw pinecones at passersby at the gate, he ended up at the library again, and this time, it was arguably intentional. At least by his subconscious. He opened the door and walked in again, looking around.
"Still boring." he confirmed aloud. "You still here, meany? I'm surprised they haven't gotten here yet." he called to the general area of the library, but he stayed in the doorway now, leaned against the door frame. -
Loralei head his voice and glanced over from her spot behind the bookshelves. She didn't say a word, just glared, then ducked back behind the shelf again.
Riot lay asleep under the desk, purring lightly.
