Tess roughly but carefully grabbed Ellie's arm, guiding her on the path Joel had taken. "Stay close, alright?" She said, and Ellie nodded, shrugging her arm out of Tess's grasp and following close by her. She watched as Joel killed the infected person, wincing slightly at the action. Tess urged Ellie to move forward, staying behind the girl to protect her from behind. She wasn't going to risk losing her if this mission really did mean they would get their guns back. -
Joel looked behind him to ensure Tess and Ellie were okay. When he saw they were fine, he moved into the next room. On the other side of the room, he saw the ladder that Ellie had mentioned before. Joel surveyed the room, before stepping inside. There were two shapes on the floor, that Joel could only assume were infected. He moved his way over to the first one, albeit a bit slowly. It looked still, but he wasn't going to take any chances. He drove the knife into the skull, and the body jerked once. Joel shivered slightly, as he made his way over to the other body in the floor. Before Joel could raise the knife over his head, the infected shot up, and knocked Joel back, flat onto his back.
Joel looked up for a moment, his eyes wide with fear. He dropped the knife and scrambled to reach for it. The creature lunged at him, it's teeth mere meters from his face. He was struggling to hold it back. "T-tess!" He yelled, kicking his legs, trying to counter the creature's weight. -
Tess kicked into gear, running over and dragging the zombie-like creature away from Joel. She wrapped her arm around its neck, suffocating it and choking it to death. She exhaled, letting it drop to the floor in a thud. "f---in' hell, that was a jumpscare," she muttered, grabbing Joel's hand and pulling him up. "You okay? Didn't get bit or anything?"
-
Joel sat up for a moment, relief flooding his chest. He looked down at his arms and legs, but everything seemed to be fine. "Other than startled, I don't see any wounds..." He said, making sure he was fine. He looked at the cracked watch on his wrist and took a deep breath. "Thank you for taking care of that for me." Joel stood up and looked at Tess. He gave her a hug, then stepped back. "Alright, let's go." He said, walking up to the ladder, and climbing his way up.
-
Tess hugged Joel with a sigh of relief before letting him go, pocketing her pistol. "No worries," she murmured, gesturing for a slightly shaken Ellie to go up the ladder. "You okay, kid?" Ellie shook herself from her daze, looking over at Tess. "Yeah, I'm- I'm alright," she replied quickly, climbing up the ladder. She reached the top and stood up, brushing herself off.
-
Joel stood at the top of the building and took a deep breath. He could finally the part of the capitol building. There were areas that had been destroyed since the last time him and Tess had been here. There were some spots where it looked like a couple of cars had been exploded, but nothing to major. As Joel surveyed the area, he could see a couple infected roaming the streets, but nothing major. "So," He said, looking at Tess and Ellie. "I saw we take one of these boards and put it across the top of these buildings." He said pointing at the building they were currently on, and the one next to it. "I looks like there is a ladder there, we can go down it, across the street and through that building. From there, take the sidewalk down, and climbed the fenced barrier around the day-care center, and exit through the fenced door."
Joel was trying to get a grasp for what exactly to say next. "I guess from there, we should find a place to camp out. At least seek shelter before night fall." -
(*say I can't spell xD)
-
Tess and Ellie nodded, following Joel's lead. "That seems like the best option, as long as we can find a safe place to huddle down," Tess added, walking over to the board Joel mentioned.
-
Joel helped Tess lift the board up, and place it on the sides of the two buildings. "I'll go across first, just in case." He said, taking one foot and putting it on the board. Heights was something that he wasn't scared of, but making sure it was safe to cross was the most important things. He placed his foot in front of the other and walked across with now problems. "Alright you two. Your turns."
-
"You go first," Tess said to Ellie, nudging her forward. Ellie shot her a quick glare before walking over, stepping up on the board. She tapped on it a few times before walking across, quickly making it to Joel with no issues. Tess followed suit, walking across and over to the two. She almost made it to the end when the board started to creak under her feet, making her tense. She quickly jumped over to the ledge just before the board cracked under her feet, crouching by the ledge and slowing her breaths. "f---in' hell," she muttered, standing and looking over to the edge, watching the two pieces of wood tumble to the ground. "Well- At least it wasn't me," she added with an anxious chuckle, rubbing the back of her neck.
-
Joel looked at Ellie, then Tess. Thankfully, there was already a ladder leaned up next to the building they could use. "We'll get you that ladder in just a second." Joel looked at Tess and walked over to the edge of the building. "You first kid." He said, nodding toward the ladder. Ellie looked at him for a moment, sighed and climbed down the ladder. Joel followed quickly behind. Once they got to the bottom, Joel picked up the ladder, and moved it to the building where Tess was. "There you go." He said, as he held the bottom of the ladder steady.
-
Tess walked over, using the ladder and making her way over to Joel. She nodded in thanks, walking over to Ellie. "Alright, where to next?"
-
"Follow me." Joel said attentively. He made his way across the street and headed into a delipidated building. Inside, it didn't look to much different from the others. The floor in this one seemed cleaner than the rest, and there were baskets instead of shelves. Joel's shoes thudded across the ceramic tile. "You know, I kind of miss the way things were." He picked up a magazine off the counter, and chuckled. "Now look at us. Pretty much back at the beginning."
-
"Yeah," Tess agreed with a nod, surveying the area. "Just imagine how nice these buildings used to look, before the world went to s---..." Ellie walked forward, peering out one of the windows. "Wow," she murmured, a hint of astonishment in her voice. "I can't believe how close we are to the border. The outside." Tess chuckled sarcastically, crossing her arms. "Trust me, kid, you won't be excited when, or more likely if, you go out there."
-
Joel nodded in agreement with Tess. "So kid, how did you end up with Marlene exactly?" He walked into the next room, and saw a back door. He looked around, just to see if there was anything of value in here before they exited. He saw a glimmer of something in the middle of the room. It seemed to be silver, whatever it was. He made his way over to the item, and picked it up.
