Joel looked at the girl, his gaze hardened into something serious. He couldn't let anything get to him. This wasn't his daughter. His daughter was gone. He walked up to the cabinet that was in the room and pulled the remaining stockpile of ammo. He grabbed more than enough ammo for him and Tess's pistols. He also grabbed a couple of boxes of shot-gun ammo, just in case. It wasn't unusual to find weapons that had been abandoned by their owners. It would be however harder to find one that worked and hadn't been brutalized by the elements.
He pulled out the map that Marlene had given him, as they followed Ellie out of the room. He unfolded it and looked at it. He let out a short quip of air. "Of course." He muttered and showed the marked location on the map. It was the Capitol Building. -
"So, guess I'm stuck with you two," Ellie said, whether it was to alleviate the awkwardness or make friendly conversation, even she didn't know, "I guess, maybe, we should introduce ourselves? Y'know, in case I need to find your loved ones to tell you sacrificed yourself for my sake."
Tess rolled her eyes, glancing at Ellie for a moment. "I'd rather not. I don't like getting to know people who aren't gonna be around long." -
Joel chuckled at the response Tess gave the girl. "My name is Joel, and that hot-wired firecracker is Tess. The best partner in this damned apocalypse." Joel gave Tess a pat on the back, then turned his attention back to the girl. The supposed cargo they were supposed to take to the Capitol Building. "Now, who are you? You sure aren't old enough to be a Firefly, much less with Marlene." Joel stepped in front of the girl, walking down the hallway to a secret entrance. He paused for a moment, awaiting her reply.
-
Tess sighed, rubbing the back of her neck. "The name's Ellie," the young girl said, glancing at the older man, "and yeah, I'm not one. Just- just some girl caught up in this s---show."
-
Joel paid close attention to the girls mannerisms. There was a piece that him and Tess were missing. He doubted Ellie would tell them anything. The best he could do was ask Marlene, or whomever was going to be at the Capitol building. "Mhm, no one." Joel said, as he moved a small shelf out of the way, to reveal a hole in the wall. This hole led to an underground network of tunnels that could get them out of the city, quickly. Joel walked through the hole, taking a flashlight out of the side of his bag, and turning it on. It was going to get fairly dark in here, and the last thing Tess or him needed was to lose sight, or sense that they had.
Joel continued the trek forward, until he reached a small hatch in the floor. He bent down and opened the hatch, the smell of stagnant water, and dust filled the air. He was the first one to start the descent down. He looked at Tess and Ellie. "Wait here. I'll call you when it's clear." As Joel made his way down the ladder, he was wondering if he made the right decision. Or course, it was too late to even think about that now. His boots hit the floor, and they echoed all the way through the pipes. He shined his flashlight behind him, and in front of him. Both areas seemed to be clear. He stepped forward, his boots sloshing around in the stagnant water. He didn't hear anything, but it was always good to stay alert in your surroundings. "You're good to come down!" He yelled to Tess and Ellie, his voice seeming to resound for miles.
(Sorry I didn't follow the exact path of the game, but I thought it might be fun to go a different way than how they did in the game! I hope that's okay!) -
(yeah, that's all good!! it'd maybe make things a bit easier, since idk all the lore lol)
"You go first, I'll go on after," Tess offered, going to hold up the hatch for the girl. Ellie walked over and climbed down with hesitation, still not entirely trusting of the older woman. She hopped off the ladder with a quiet thud, making her way over to Joel. Tess followed down the ladder, climbing down and following behind Ellie. -
Joel looked at Tess and waved her up next to him. "I am a little worried about Marlene saying her squad is going to be in the Capitol Building. Every single place near there is covered in infected. How do you think her crew is going to push through that, much less us?" He walked forward with Tess beside them, and Ellie following behind. Each step they made, splattered more water about. This tunnel wasn't too long, but it at least gave him and Tess a minute to work out a game plan. "That, and no matter what path we take, we are all at risk. The problem is trying to find the path of least resistance." Joel had no problem fighting infected, if it was just him and Tess. With the girl, he didn't know if she could shoot a gun, or if she even knew how to defend herself. She was a walking target as far as he was concerned.
-
"I think Marlene said something about this path being a safe route, at least from infected," Ellie interjected, poking through the two adults. "If you take a turn here, then keep going for a couple feet and turn left, that exit leads you down an alley, that then exits out to a pretty empty back street." She paused, crossing her arms. "And for your information, I can fend for myself," she added, knowing they were worried she'd be the weakest link. Even though she doesn't actually know how to properly shoot a gun, at least she's tried before. Sure she lived out of pure luck, but who cares. "Well- I guess I've never actually been taught how to, but that's besides the point. I can still keep myself safe, even without using a gun." Tess raised an eyebrow skeptically, placing her hands on her hips. "So, you're saying you're useless on your own-" "Say that again, and you'll see just what I can do, a--hole."
-
"Now look." Joel said, his tone raising slightly. "We are here to deliver you as cargo. Nothing more, nothing less. You are not getting a gun. Secondly, if you could keep yourself safe, you wouldn't have been with Marlene." Joel started to take the turn that Ellie had pointed out to them. He knew he was being harsh, but at the end of the day; the girl was cargo, and they had a job to do. As Joel followed the path, they eventually came to the empty back street. There were old cars covered in rust, and some in moss. The ground was cracked and eroded from the water and the rain. The top of the capitol building could be seen in the distance, but they were far from it.
Joel walked down the street, listening for any sounds that could indicate this area could be infested. Sure, Ellie said it was clear, but anything could happen. And it's always better to be safe than sorry. -
Ellie rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. "I just stick with her because strength in numbers, not like I need her to protect myself," she retorted, her voice wavering near the end of her sentence. "We'd all be dead if we were on our own, right?" "Easy for you to say when you don't have any actual survival skills," Tess joked, a small smirk appearing on her face. Ellie flipped the older woman off, walking ahead of her. She peered out of the back alley, surveying the area. "Coast looks clear, and I don't hear anything," she whispered, glancing over at Joel. "Now, why is it that I can't have a gun? Not like I'd turn on you or accidentally shoot you in the foot. I'm not that stupid."
-
"Didn't say you were. If Marlene wanted you to have a gun, she would have given you one." Joel shrugged his shoulders. "Not to mention, we don't know you. The only information we have is that you are immune." Joel continued walking, the gravel crunching beneath his boots. He could hear the sounds of birds chirpping, and for a moment he felt something that could almost resemble peace. He shook off the feeling of solitude, and looked at Tess. "I think the best thing for us to do is climb to the top of one of these buildings so we can survey the area. Get a plan going for which route we need to take. What do you think?"
-
"Yeah, that'd be the best, though I'm not sure what the safest route up would be," Tess replied, walking over to Joel's side. "I recognize this building," Ellie said, squinting at the concrete tower. "There should be one of those fire escape ladders in the back that can get us in, considering how any enterance to this building is either blocked or sealed shut." She paused, looking over at the adults. "Y'know, I kind of know this place like the back of my hand. If you could let me take the lead-" "Ha! No way in hell, short stuff," Tess retorted, walking towards the building.
-
Joel followed behind Tess, heading toward the building with the fire escape ladder. It would be a perfect vantage point, and maybe on the way he could try to talk to Ellie about why she was with Marlene in the first place. As he and Ellie caught up with Tess, they approached the building. It was in better shape than most of the other buildings in the area, but this caused Joel to worry. If that was the case, there could be some infected inside.
Joel pushed open the door to the building, and raised his pistol. He walked a couple of feet into the building, and soon his eyes adjusted to the lights. There were papers scattered on the floor, and broken shelves to the left and right. He could see rounds of shotgun ammo in the floor. He looked at Tess and pointed to the empty shells. "Be cautious, and keep the girl next to you." He whispered, as he turned his flashlight on again. -
Tess nodded, keeping an eye on the girl. Ellie followed behind Joel, pulling a knife out of the pocket of her pants. "I swear this place was completely empty last I was here," she murmured, glancing around at a chair that was knocked over and had bullet holes in the seat. "Guess some s--- happened in here..." "Not surprised, someone probably tried to hide out here," Tess added, gently nudging a broken shelf out of her way, "but got bombarded by some infected, or something worse-" Ellie shuddered, gripping the knife in her hand.

(Fox stuffies are the best! :3)
Joel shined his flashlight on a set of stairs that led up; further into the building. There seemed to be fungal like growths stretching onto the steps. It wasn't a lot, but definitely a sign that some infected had been here. Joel looked back at Ellie and Tess. "I'm going to head up. Tess, follow me. Ellie; once we make sure the area is clear, then you can come up." Joel climbed up the steps, his flashlight cutting through the floating dust particles. As he made his way up the stairs, he heard shuffling from the room that was up ahead.
Joel crouched down, but continued to move forward. He aimed his pistol and looked to the right. Before he could even think, one of the infected let out a shrill noise. Joel knew it hadn't seen them, but it still made his heart jump. He quietly moved into the room. From where he was, the infected wasn't too far. Joel didn't want to use his pistol, just in case there were others in the area. He shuffled past the broken tables, and papers that were slung about until he was directly behind the creature. Joel stood up slightly, and plunged the knife straight into the infected's skull.
