"that's more like it." Jack said. He wasn't used to being this unserious but he thought he might as well try his hand at jokes.

Mildred chuckled, eating some more of her food. She paused for a moment. ‘Do you think they’ve found Frederick yet?’ she asked.

"probably not. He's more slippery than a stick of warm butter when you have soapy hands." Jack said as he dug into his mashed Potatoes. They were incredibly smooth and strangely well spiced.

‘I dare you to say that 10 times fast,’ Mildred said jokingly, taking another bite from her food. ‘Do you think he’s even still in the library?’

"he could be anywhere but I don't think he'd be stupid enough to stay there." Jack said as he poured gravy over the mashed potatoes

'Fair enough,' Mildred said, swinging her legs under her table. 'He seems like a jerk.'

"it's a damn manipulative and charming jerk." Jack said

'I wouldn't say charming, but sure,' Mildred said, drumming her fingers on her knees. 'I never actually saw his face. Just his greasy handkerchief.'

"it's his family's silk handkerchief isn't it?" Jack said as he pulled a pineapple slice off of his ham.

'Yeah, that one,' Mildred said. 'He must have picked it up too late. It was his blood in the library, not mine.'

"again, very sorry for the blood rage. It's an unfortunate instinct." Jack said

'It's not your fault,' Mildred said, spooning food into her mouth. 'It's not like it's something you can control. And you didn't hurt anybody anyway, so there's no need to be sorry.'

"you shouldn't be so calm about it. Humans don't survive vampire blood rages. We are stronger, faster, and completely mindless in the event." Jack said

Mildred shrugged. ‘I mean, it was scary, but not enough so that it made me think any less of you.’

"okay then." Jack said as he cut into the ham slice.
