Mildred looked away. She remembered the horrible day her family had recieved the telegram of her father's death in the mines. They couldn't even afford a funeral so they buried his favourite things in the garden, only to be burned down a year later. 'So it should,' was Mildred's response.
-
"I figured you'd understand. Mining has always been a fairly selfish pursuit anyhow." Jack said. He always hated the stories of human kings and it started with mines.
-
'Yeah. I think in his lifetime my father mined more gold than he ever earned,' Mildred said. It was true. He wasn't even allowed to take any home so the gold chain on the necklace Jack held was just fool's gold.
-
"there are different, much safer ways to obtain gold. My people ultimately find it more useful though if they farm. We naturally produce many rabbits and rabbits reproduce very fast. Rabbits are the key to our economy here believe it or not." Jack said. It was true, the majority of the palace staff were payed in rabbits
-
'That's... pretty cool,' Mildred said. She looked back out the window. The sun had just set below the horizon. It was still a bit light, but the sky wasn't as colourful as before. Mildred leaned her head on her hands and closed her eyes, feeling pretty tired after barely sleeping.
-
Jack realized that his skin was starting to sting. He also realized that Collins was fairly tired. "You should get some rest." Jack said stepping away from the window. He was still scared of being burned alive but he figured he could give Mildred the necklace back in the shadows
-
Mildred rubbed her eyes and stood up. 'Yeah, I probably should,' she said, stepping away from the window. 'By the way, you should probably get more curtains for your other windows. It took a while to find a ladder big enough to hang those sheets over it.'
-
"materials for curtains are lacking, and most undead just stay in their rooms during the day so we find no need for them." Jack said as he extended his arm out to return the necklace back to Mildred
-
Mildred took the necklace and put it around her neck. 'Makes sense, I guess. I'll take down the sheets later, if you don't mind them there for the time being.'
-
"take your time. The maids might grab them later" jack said. He looked down to his skin. It was an uncomfortable red, and now that the sun was out of the sky it was starting to sting.
-
Mildred nodded. She noticed Jack look to his arm so she followed his gaze. 'Are you OK?' she asked.
-
"my skin hurts." Jack said. He poked his arm and winced. It hurt even more to touch it. "Does the sun always do this?" Jack asked. He felt the stinging on anything the sun touched
-
Mildred winced. 'Yeah. Sometimes if you stay in the sun too long it burns you. Vampires must have really sentitive skin.'
-
"then maybe it's a good thing we don't have that blue stone." Jack said as he looked grimly at his reddened skin
-
'I know a remedy,' Mildred said, annoyed with herself to have but him. 'Are there aloe vera plants in your garden?'
