Jack froze when he saw the sunlight. He took a step back in fear. It was evident in his eye and every mannerism. "It's day?" He questioned fearfully. He instinctively covered his face with his arm slightly
-
'Not really. The sun is just setting,' Mildred said. 'I suppose I should explain. I did some research in the library. Vampires can go out in the sun, but only when holding a particular stone, lapis lazuli, and only behind a window. I asked one of the maids why they didn't use it, but she told me that there's no way to obtain such a stone here.' She pulled out a necklace from under her shirt and fiddled with the charm. 'My father gave me this necklace when I was little. The charm is lapis lazuli.' Mildred took the necklace off and held it out to Jack. 'I felt bad about what I said to you about the sunrises abd sunsets being so beautiful, and I wanted you to see it.'
-
Jack hesitated, but he took a step forward. Then he hesitantly grabbed the necklace. "I trust you." Jack said. He was still scared, but Mildred had not lied to him yet. If she was lying he hoped she'd have to listen to Wilhelm and his whole people's sorrow. On another thought, the necklace was from her father why would she loan it to a vampire with a malicious intent
-
Mildred smiled. 'Good,' she said, and took his other hand and lead him to the unblocked window. 'Close your eyes,' she told him, stopping where the shade stopped and the light of the sun peeked into the halls.
-
Jack held the necklace tightly before shutting his eyes. He was tense. He'd never heard of lapis lazuli but he figured he might've overlooked a book about vampires considering he was one.
-
Mildred stepped into the sun, leading Jack next to her. 'Now open them,' she said softly, looking out at the sunset.
-
Jack felt like there was a weightless blanket on him. He slowly opened his eyelids. It hurt strong, he closed them tight again. Then he opened them again slowly. He saw a fiery ball of... brightness. It was strong but... gentle. He stared expressionlessly squinting before slowly smiling
-
Mildred looked up at him, and smiled when he smiled. The sky was alight with purples and oranges and pinks as the sun slowly dipped over the horizon. 'Do you like it?' Mildred asked, hoping he would.
-
"I've never seen... anything like it. It's beautiful." Jack said. He was holding onto the warmth he'd felt under the sunlight. It stung him in a way. He wondered if Alexander felt this way the first time he saw sunlight
-
Mildred grinned and she looked back out the window, watching the sun set. She kneeled down at the window sill and propped her hands on her chin and her elbows on the sill. She'd seen the sun set and rise many times, but each time she thought it as magnificent as she had when she first had.
-
"is the sun always this warm?" Jack asked. He noticed something though when he broke eye contact with the sun for a second. His skin had started to turn a strange shade of red. He clutched the necklace tighter
-
'Sometimes,' Mildred looked up at him. 'You look a little less pale. Like a normal person.'
-
"I wonder where I could find these stones. I want Wilhelm to be able to see the sun. I want my citizens to see this." Jack said. He wondered if everyone would like the beautiful bright thing
-
'My father got the stone from the mines,' Mildred said. 'Maybe there'll be mines around here.'
-
"we avoid mines around here due to the dangers of it. If we started mining it could be beneficial, but the dangers worry me for my people." Jack said. He'd heard of mines trapping people underground forever that shook him to the core with rage against the human king
