"I'm old, I'm selfish, I live in a perceived solitude most of the time, I covet the companionship of things that don't belong in my kingdom and I drain the life of all which is close to me. Or so it appeared." Jack said.
-
‘I don’t think you’re selfish. Or that you drain life. I think you’re really kind,’ Mildred said.
-
"when have I ever been kind? You're the kind one dear Mildred." Jack said as he took a piece of garlic bread and dipped it in the olive oil.
-
‘Well, you didn’t kill me, for one,’ Mildred said with a small chuckle. ‘Most vampires probably would’ve. You gave me a place to sleep and three meals a day.’
-
"Mildred, that's the bare minimum. Don't praise me for the bare minimum." Jack said
-
‘Most people don’t do the bare minimum,’ Mildred said.
-
"and that's the fault of this harsh world. In any case I'm doing what most people would." Jack said
-
‘Still. I’ll always be grateful to you, Jack,’ Mildred said.
-
"the things you say warm my heart, Mildred." Jack said. He smiled. Mildred slowly but surely made his life better. He could see the positive impact.
-
Mildred beamed. She grabbed another roll and spread some more jam on it. ‘I’m glad, Jack.’
-
"I feel you'll continue to warm my heart." Jack mused. He smiled warmly before taking a bite of garlic bread. Garlic, in this specific instance, was not incredibly toxic to him, but it was incredibly spicy. It wasn't real garlic at all truly. It was actually a spice made to perfectly imitate garlic.
-
‘I hope so. I like making people happy,’ Mildred said. It was the only thing she was good for, in her eyes. She didn’t really have anything else going for her.
-
"you are wonderful at making people happy. Maybe that's why Frederick chose to talk to you. He probably wanted to manipulate you." Jack said. He coughed a bit as he suffered through the garlic bread. It hurt but the bread was delicious.
-
‘… Thanks, I think,’ Mildred said. She obviously didn’t like the idea of being manipulated by a vampire’s ex-boyfriend.
-
"i think they'll catch him eventually. If they don't he'll have to suffer through a gala he can't attend. After the gala we'll definitely catch him." Jack said. He finished his garlic bread then immediately downed his cup of milk. The burning sensation in his mouth was almost gone.
