‘That’s strangely poetic. So which are you in, then?’ Mildred asked, looking up at him.

"I'm... Not really sure. I feel as though sometimes I'm slipping into the warm waters of sadness, but I don't always feel hopeless. I feel as though it would be wrong for me to call it a depression." Jack said.

‘Perhaps. Wilhelm is probably just worried. I’d be too if my friend started eating dirt and biting his hand,’ Mildred said. ‘Dirt can’t taste that good. Unless it’s a normal thing for vampires to do.’

"he worries for me too much. I'm still alive." Jack said.

‘He has a valid reason to be concerned,’ Mildred said

"do I fall apart that often? Jack asked. He certainly knew he was difficult to deal with at times but he didn't realize it had gotten bad

‘I suppose so. It’s normal to have big feelings, though,’ Mildred said. ‘But… you were eating dirt. It’s a rather interesting coping tool.’

"eating dirt isn't my coping mechanism, I was severely dehydrated. I saw a red pigment in the dirt and in my delirious state tried to eat it hoping my throat would stop burning." Jack said

‘Interesting logic. Why didn’t you get blood when you needed it?’ Mildred asked.

"i was thinking about a lot of stuff. Also I felt like that book guilt tripped me." Jack said

‘The book Frederick left? Wasn’t it about an evil old man?’ Mildred asked.

"it was about a beautiful and magical unicorn who was searching for the rest of her kind." Jack said, quick to correct Mildred on the plot of the book

‘Same thing. Then the unicorn transformed into a human and it was such a terrible thing, yada yada,’ Mildred said. ‘What does that have to do with anything, though?’

"I'd thought Frederick gave me the book to tell me I'm king haggard, but I'm not king haggard. Being an evil old selfish king sounds terrible to me. I thought refusing to drink blood would be like an attonement." Jack said

‘Not drinking blood would kill you, first of all. What makes you think you’re anything like King Haggard?’ Mildred asked, frowning.
