The truck was dark and stuffy. It was hard to breath so Amira held her breath until she had to take in air, and continued this for the next two hours until the truck stopped. Amira shook slightly, scared. They were here.
-
“Let’s go outside though.” Kai said, not wanting to stay in the house, and Aaron nodded.
They went outside to the fresh air, sitting down on the dirt. -
Amira rushed out of the truck taking in deep breaths of air. She turned around expecting more to follow her. Nobody did.
"Why aren't you lot coming?" she asked in English and then repeated in Arabic.
"We are going to the next one, some of us even the one after that, you have been excepted here dear, you are only a child" one of the woman told her.
Amira nodded approaching the gates of the Turkey Refuge Camp. It seemed pretty small to her. Through the slits of the gate she saw two people. One boy about her age, and another looking around the age of six, maybe seven. -
Kai saw the refuge truck arrive, and noticed a girl not much younger than he was there. It didn’t look like she was with anyone else, which was both sad and roughly the same as how he showed up.
-
Amira took a deep breath and entered the refuge camp. She had to bite her sleep to stop herself crying. She looked over at the older boy and smiled sadly at him. He didn't seem to have any parents either, unless they were somewhere else.
-
Kai walked over to the girl.
“Hi.” He said, looking at her. “I’m Kai, and my little brother is Aaron. Do you want to sit down for a bit?” -
Amira sighed with relief. "Thanks, I'm Amira" she responded following Kai to the bench he was sat on. She closed her eyes, steadying her breathing. She knew she must look silly but it helped calm her, helped her stop thinking about the war in Syria. Her Mother, Dalia, her Father, her best-friend. She had left all of them behind.
(Sorry if it sounds like I'm making my part too dramatic 😳) -
“Let me guess.” Kai said, looking at her intently. “You’re feeling guilty that you had to leave all of your family and friends back in Syria.” He knew how that felt. He managed to get enough money to bring Aaron, but he still couldn’t help but feel guilty that he left everyone else behind.
-
Amira looked up and nodded. "My father could only afford for one of us, I tried not to come without them but" she of looked at Kai gesturing with her hands.
"So, how long have you been here for, and is it just you and Aaron or?" -
“It’s just me and Aaron.” Kai said sadly. “And we’ve been here for a month or two.”
He could tell that Aaron was trying to contain his excitement, but he wasn’t exactly succeeding. -
"Oh, you've really been here that long?" Amira was taken aback. She thought you were only here for a few days, a week at most. Not months. She shook of the thought, and turned to Aaron forcing a smile.
"So, what do you guys do for fun round here?" -
“Well we’re trying to get this guy to socialize.” I said, elbowing Aaron. “But there’s not much to do besides the stuff that you brought for fun yourself.”
-
Amira sighed. "So pretty much boring then, seeing as we couldn't bring much" she stated fiddling with her fingers.
-
“Yeah, well…. You got me and Aaron.” Kai said.
-
Amira smiled. "I guess I have"
