“You had another nightmare, didn’t you?” Kai asked his brother. Aaron nodded looking down. “I had one too.” Kai said, and Aaron looked up at him, eyes filled with tears.
“Was it about….” Aaron asked, sounding too scared to finish his sentence, but Kai knew what he meant, and nodded. -
Amira, Dalia and her Mother entered the female block. It was a lot worse then Amira had thought. They all slept in one tiny room, cluttered with thin mattresses and blankets. The bathroom was more like a cupboard, filled with a toilet and taps that didn't work. She sighed putting down her sister and taking her hand.
-
“Let’s make a deal.” Kai said, standing up. “You try and make new friends, and if after an hour you still would rather stay here, you can.”
Aaron sighed. “Fiiiiine.” He said quietly. “But will you stay close?”
Kai nodded. -
"I don't like it! It's horrible" Dalia whined creeping backwards.
"Tough" the man grumbled. "Pay up and you can leave tomorrow"
Dalia looked confused and ran behind their Mum. -
They went outside to the little enclosed area where all the refuges from Syria were, and saw two kids playing.
“There.” Kai said, nudging Aaron. “Hang out with them.” -
Andrea shook her head at the man who sighed and left the house. Amira expected her Mother to say something but she didn't, she looked like she was going to cry to be honest. "It's alright Mum, I'll look after you, and Dalia" she explained trying to be helpful.
Andrea bit her lip and shook her head, then made a gesture saying follow me. Her two daughters trailed behind her until their reached a spare mattress, with a filthy blanket and no pillow.
"You and Dali sleep here" she suggested pointing at the mattress.
Amira shook her head. "No, then you'll have to sleep on the floor. You take the bed with Dali, she's only small, and I'll sleep next to you guys" she stated laying down on the floor. "It's actually quite comfy" this was a lie.
(Sorry it's a bit long-trying to speed things up :)) -
(It’s totally fine :))
Kai watched as Aaron walked up to the kids, making sure his little brother was ok. After a while he noticed some adults watching the other kids, looking like the parents. Kai walked up to them, trying to think of something to say. -
Andrea smiled gratefully at her but said nothing more, turning her attention on Dalia who had started to cry. Amira sighed sitting against the wall, taking in what had happened in the last twenty-four hours.
-
In the end Kai didn’t say anything to the other parents, he just stood and watched Aaron play with the other kids.
After a while it started getting dark.
“Hey Aaron!” He called out to his brother. “Time to go inside!”
Aaron nodded, said bye to the kids, and went inside with Kai.
“We got peanut butter jelly sandwiches for dinner.” Kai offered, and Aaron took one. -
As night went on, the other Refuges, that there seemed to be hundreds of them, Amira had noticed were either trying to sleep or were asleep. She sighed, the floor hard and cold against her skin. She wondered if she could use the end of the mattress for a pillow, but she decided against it-she didn't want to wake her Mother and Dalia up.
-
They finished eating and went to their room. Kai had convinced the people in charge of the camps that him and Aaron should stay in a room together, since there was only two of them.
They both got to bed surprisingly quickly, but Kai had another nightmare about Syria. -
The morning came all too quickly. Amira woke up to a hungry stomach, a crying sister, and loads of younger children who were staying here for now were crying too. She sighed, wondering when breakfast would happen. She walked over to a woman who was sat against a wall eating a slice of bread.
"What do we get for breakfast?" she asked.
"Slice of bread" she answered. "If you pay"
Amira shivered in disgust and walked back over to her mother. -
Kai woke up to Aaron shaking him.
“What do you want?” Kai asked sleepily.
“I had another nightmare,” Aaron said, looking scared. “But it was more realistic. Kai, it was like I was THERE.”
Kai motioned for Aaron to get on the bed, and he did.
“Listen to me.” He said, grabbing his brothers shoulders. “You are NOT in Syria. We’re in Turkey, and we’re safe here.”
Aaron nodded, still looking scared. “Can I sleep in your bed with you?” Kai nodded, trying to go back to sleep. -
Andrea put up her hand up like a morning gesture, then showed that she was hungry and asked Amira if she knew where to get food from. Amira shook her head sadly. "I don't know where you get it from, but you have to pay for one slice of bread, and I don't think it has butter on even!"
Andrea's eyes widened, she was on the brink of tears.
"Don't worry Mum, I'll sort something out for us" Amira ushered hoping to calm her down. -
Kai and Aaron woke up, and went to get some food. Most people had to pay for their food, but Kai had snuck some food before he left Syria. He held up two granola bars, giving one to Aaron, and they both ate in silence.
