I felt content. This emotion I felt.. I wanted to protect them, to care for them, and to just be there. Could it be? Something closer than friends? Or could it be just... star-struck? No matter what, I felt ready for whatever came our way. "This.. I love this.", I whispered as I closed my eyes, a small smile on my face.
-
"As do I," Aires whispers back, inching their hand over and locking their fingers with Revelation's. "You know what? I actually thought you were a potential threat when we first met, now I can hardly see you as one to kill a fly. It's kind of cute, actually. But I know not to underestimate your swordsmanship. After all, you did learn from the best," they laugh.
-
I chuckled and locked their fingers with mine, feeling safer than I had in recent years. "Ah, but I still have much to learn.", I said as I opened my eyes, smirking. "I think I'm ready." I looked towards them as I felt quite joyous.
-
"Ready to learn more, you mean?" they question as another question crosses their mind. "I'd be happy to help you learn."
-
"Well, actually.." I looked into their eyes with a bit of seriousness. "I'd like to know more about you. Who you are, what makes you, you.", I said nervously whilst rubbing the back of my head.
-
"Oh, I—see," Aries replies, flattered and nervously looking away. "Well, maybe you haven't caught in by now, but I'm a witch, for one. By blood, I'm an only child, but I do have a handful adopted sibling; however, that is aside from me, for the time being. My kind—Darkavonian—a hybrid race of witches that possess both light and dark magic. Most of my family has been hunted down and slaughtered either by the Avalonians—witches of light—or by the Kateris—a clan of witch slayers. Since Darkavonians are always being hunted, we primarily raise armies to fight and protect ourselves and others. When peaceful times are upon us, we offer our skills for hire." Zacharius' smile fades as they finish in a low voice. "Sadly, fighting is all a Darkavonian knows, so my path isn't special; it's just how I was raised."
-
I felt deeply ashamed and in sorrow upon listening. I didn't realize, but I hugged them tightly, trying not to show any sorrow, but failing a bit. "I am so sorry.", I whispered as I could barely find my voice. "Hell has followed your kind for the longest time, but I will not treat you the way your kind was."
-
"I appreciate your concern, but I'll be alright. Some things just have to be this way, no matter how painful it is...."
After a moment of silence, Aries looks up at Revelation. "What about you?" -
I sighed, remembering just how it all went. "Foster home, to foster home, to foster home. I was always the one who stuck out most, leaving many families to just.. abandon me because I didn't have specific features. Not tall enough, too abnormal, taking things apart when not in view. I eventually grew too old to be under their protection, and the night before I turned 16, I left. Never looked back, made a home in the woods with a workshop, and lived peacefully for ten years. Had to lie to get a job using fake ear designs and was able to get food and working water by growing it myself.", I said, a small look of sorrow on my face. "They left me with no food many nights, always made me last for just about everything, and took away all of my rights. I was treated more like an animal than.. whatever I am. Only things I want to know are who my parents are and why they gave me away." I looked at the ground, struggling not to cry as I finished.
-
"I—I'm terribly sorry to hear that. I cannot say I know what it's like to have such a life, but I do know how hard it is to grow up without your parents. I do apologize that you've had such a hard life, and I wish I could have been there to help you through it, but, I am here, now, and I will gladly do whatever I can to help you," Aries replies, resting their hand on Revelation's shoulder.
-
"It's perfectly okay.", I said, looking to the sky with a slight smile. "The last decade's been kind of chill to myself. Working with my hands, living off the land, and working in secrecy has been a fun experience. Sometimes, all it takes for someone to get over a terrible time is a bit of solitude, experimenting, and just living life to the fullest they can.", I finished as I looked at the falling blossoms. "One could say I seem like a free spirit. You're the only one who knows."
-
"I see... If there is anything I can do for you, though, please let me know," Zacharius pushes.
-
"I will. And.. thank you.", I said, struggling not to break down. " We've only known each other a week, but I feel like I've known you my whole existence." Was that too weird for me to say? I sighed and looked into the rose coloured sky, a small smile forming.
-
"Hm. Rather peculiar that you say that, but not necessarily in a bad way. I'm quite flattered, actually. And I must say it only feels natural to be around you."
-
I felt my face heat up slightly as I gazed into their eyes, gently cupping their chin and chuckling. "I honestly thought you'd say that it would be weird, then sock me in the gut. Glad I was wrong. You don't want to do that, do you?", I asked, interested in their answer.
