"Yes, but again, not at every waking hour of every day," Cassie said.
-
"He's hung around you the whole time at school, every single day. And then he also walks you home, and has eaten supper at your house according to the rumors. Of course, rumors are rumors, but still. It’s almost like he’s your boyfriend!” Garret eyed her suspiciously. “He isn’t your boyfriend, right?”
-
"No, he's not," Cassie said with an edge in her voice she was surprised was there. She looked at Garret. "Is there a reason you're walking with me?"
-
Garret smiled sweetly at her, coating his voice with a sickeningly sweet sugar. “Of course, Cassandra. It’s dangerous for a human like you to walk by yourself. Who knows what could happen? There are quite a lot of witches and warlocks around this part of town who are desperate to throw their horrid curses onto people. Doesn’t that sound dangerous?”
-
"I've been walking down the same path for the past two years and nothing has happened," Cassie countered. "Besides, you're probably more dangerous to me than any of those things."
-
“Excuse me?” Garret stopped in his tracks, narrowing his eyes. Realizing how he was coming off as threatening, he quickly changed his posture, forcing his lips to perk up into a forced smile. He continued walking alongside Cassie. “How so?”
-
"Because for the past three years they've left me alone. You're not." And with that she sped up her pace.
-
“Three years? Surely it hasn’t been that long!”
-
"Freshman year, I'm a junior," Cassie said.
-
“Come now, surely it hasn’t been that long!” Garret said with a nervous chuckle.
-
"Apparently you can't do math," Cassie said. "Honestly if Porak hadn't spotted me in the halls that day, I would have probably gone my entire high school life without being noticed."
-
A low chuckle rumbled out from Garret's throat, a smirk that held nothing but misfortune curving up his lips. He stopped walking and gripped Cassie tightly by her shoulder, leaning in close to her face. His usual polite eyes had dissolved into a cruel stare as he gazed menacingly into Cassandra's orbs.
"But… don't you think things would've worked out better had that been the case, Cassandra? After all, it would be better if a human weren't to be noticed at all…~!" -
Cassie's eyes widened and her heart pumped faster. First order of business: get away from Garret. She tried to twist out of his grip. "L-Let go of me!" she frantically said.
-
Garret tilted his head to the side slightly, the smirk evolving into a creepy grin. He batted his eyes at Cassie innocently, and in that moment, he almost looked like a pure angel who had never done anything wrong in his entire life. But everyone who had come across this side of him would know otherwise.
“You look rather petrified, human. I'm barely even touching you.” Garret cooed. “But your wish is my command.”
He let go of her shoulder immediately. -
Cassie immediately took a good few steps away from him. "I think you should go now," she said with a firmness in her voice.
