Suddenly Erina felt a familiar hand on her shoulder. She turned to see who it was. "Megan!" she said with a smile.
Megan was a couple inches shorter than Erina, and had light brown hair and green eyes.
"Erin, c'mon, it's Silas' birthday!" Megan said.
"Oh no I forgot!" she said.
Megan looked up at Lares. "Who's this?" she asked.
Erina looked at Lares. "A friend," she said.
"He can come too if he wants," Megan said. -
Lares nodded vigorously. "I’d love to come."
-
Megan led the two of them to her home.
Upon entering the house, Erina said, "Alright, what have I missed?"
Silas rushed up to her. "Erin! Erin! I turned eight and I got a toy!" -
Lares was baffled by the child. He didn’t dare say a word.
-
Erina knelt down. "Can I see?"
Silas promptly took out a paper bird. "It even flaps its wings!" He took the strings and the little bird moved up and down. -
Lares thought someone might yell at him for speaking to Silas, but he did it anyway. "That’s a really cool toy," Lares commented.
-
"You can hold it," Silas said, holding the bird in front of Lares.
-
Lares smiled. "No, you have fun playing with it. I don’t think I’ll be able to hold it right."
-
"Oh," Silas said. "I'll show you!" He then positioned Lare's hands correctly and then put the bird in his hands.
-
"Huh," Lares said, not daring to move his hands. "This bird's really cool!" he exclaimed, repeating himself.
-
"I know, right?!" Silas said. He then ran off to join his other seven and eight year old friends.
Erina took the bird out of Lares' hands, saying that she'd give it back to Silas. Once she did so, she returned back to Lares.
"What did you get for your eighth birthday?" she asked. -
Lares bit his fingernails. "I can’t remember," he said.
-
"Hm," Erina said. "There's some food, let's go get some."
-
"Sure," Lares replied absently, following Erina and wondering what commoners ate.
-
On the table was buttered bread and a jar of jam. There were also two roasted rabbits that Silas' father had caught just the day before.
(I have no idea what they would eat, but I got the ideas of what to put from books I've read. I put the buttered bread because I remembered when reading Pinnochio, the boy was overjoyed because the Blue Fairy was going to give him and his friends buttered bread on [/i]both sides[/i]. The jam came from a book called The Railway Children, which was from much later in time, but their mom said that they couldn't afford to put both butter and jam on their rolls, they had to do either or. Then the rabbits, that was just because those animals would be quite common.)
