''The second one, we didn't get really far, she normally read a page or two with me then had to leave for...business,'' Aliana said, settling herself down on the couch, gripping at her pants.
-
"Okay." Shawn replied, opening the book to chapter two. He began reading it to her using voices that he imagined the characters would have, including a calm soothing voice for the narrator. He made sound effects to describe the scene. He was good at reading books. He remembered reading the last five chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone for the school talent show and he got a standing ovation.
-
Alianna listened closely, loving the voices he used for the characters in which emerged her into the story. It was far better than her mother's reading. Alianna smiled as she looked at the pictures of the monsters and the young child.
Until then, she saw her father, his tie a mess, his hair unruly and unkempt, his once bright eyes now dull. He untucked his shirt as he came out of his office, walking into the kitchen, shame resting on his back. Alianna shifted her eyes from the book to her father, listening to his muffled cries as he sobbed, covering his mouth, still not wanting the children to hear how pathetic he sounded. He furrowed his brows as he opened the fridge, no alcohol in sight. He sighed, grabbed his coat and keys, leaving the house without a word but, making sure the front door was locked and secured. Alianna's eyes resting on the front door, wondering if her father will ever return with a smile on his face or let alone, her mother. -
Shawn frowned. Now father was leaving too? He sighed and looked back at the book. "Alianna..." Shawn sighed, looking at his sister as he held back tears.
-
She was snapped from her trance, her gaze shifting to the floorboards leading to the front door. Alianna blinked away the coming tears, biting her bottom lip, not wanting to cry. She turned her gaze to Shawn, shifting in her seat. ''Um, um, y-yeah, Shawn?'' Alianna stammered, unsure of what to say or think.
-
"I won't leave you. I promise that no matter what, I will be here for you." Shawn told her, hugging his sister. "We May fight sometimes. But I care about you. Mom and Dad aren't perfect, but they still love us. Remember that, Okay? Promise me you will always remember that." He told her.
-
''I don't know if they even love us anymore,'' Alianna said, having her strong doubts, as she took a glance at the front door. ''But, I guess I can always remember that,'' She mumbled, returning the hug as she could feel her bottom lip quiver feeling ready to cry.
-
"Hey, I'll go get you that ice cream now." Shawn told her, putting the book down and heading for the kitchen.
-
Alianna nodded, standing as she began approaching the window that remained beside as she opened the curtains. She gazed out onto the driveway, the two cars normally there gone as if to see the cars would make her believe her reality was a simple nightmare. Alianna bit her bottom lip, eyes burning with tears as she stared down the street, hoping her father's or her mother's car was to pull into the driveway.
-
Shawn got out the ice cream and sighed. "Don't cry. Don't cry." He told himself. "Quit being a baby!" He muttered to himself. "If not for your own dignity, stay strong for her." He sighed to himself. Shawn forced a comforting smile as he entered the living room and handed Alianna some ice cream.
-
Alianna didn't bother to face Shawn as a car began driving down the street it was a white van but, eventually passed by the house without slowing down or stopping. She bit her bottom lip moving from the window as the curtain fell back into place. Alianna then turned her attention to her brother, a forced smile on her lips. ''Thanks for the ice cream,'' She mumbled, gazing at it, her stomach turning.
-
Shawn thought about going out to get his father. However that would leave Alaina alone, which wouldn't be healthy for her. "Hey! You wanna go on an adventure?" He asked her, gesturing to the door.
-
''An adventure? B-But, what if mommy comes and we're not here? I-I want to wait here for her,'' Alianna said, her words seeming unsure and confused. ''What kind of adventure?'' She asked unconvinced on this adventure her brilliant brother wants to go on.
-
"Well was Mommy here for us when we came home? No. So since Mommy's adventure caused us to be home alone, shouldn't we have the right to have an adventure ourselves? I mean, she would prefer that then us sitting here being all depressed. We could go to the park and see if we can catch some fire flies!" Shawn suggested.
-
Alianna bit her bottom lip, her brows furrowed as she gazed at the taunting door. ''I want to see fireflies,'' Alianna said, shuffling around the house as she put her jacket and pink shoes on. The young girl was fueled with anger and her depression, she opened the door waiting for her brother as a gentle cold breeze filled the home. ''Let's go on an adventure, hurry up, Shawn!'' Alianna said as she hopped down the steps of the front porch. Her step onto the cement pavement made a satisfying thump in her ears as a grin began to spread on her lips.
