"Well... I don't really know." Shawn sighed, wishing he knew what to say. He felt really guilty, having no idea what to do.
-
The fear of not knowing the unknown caused Alianna's heart to swell. She cleared her throat, her brows furrowed as she eyed the fireflies. ''Can you tell me a story, about fireflies?'' Aliana questioned, wanting to change the subject and to keep her mind off the changing of her family's relationships.
-
"Sure." Shawn replied, wrapping a blanket around her. "Do you know where fireflies came from?" He asked her, thinking up a story.
-
The warmth of the blanket and the gentleness of her brother's voice soothed her in the depths of the night. The fireflies flickering lights reminded her of her old, broken nightlight that she kept to this day. ''No,'' Alianna mumbled, yawning as exhaustion hit her like a crashing wave against the shore.
-
"Well, legend has it that an ordinary flie loved the water. This fly became a pirate, enjoying the sea and all the Adventures that awaited him and his leaf shaped boat! Eventually, he descovered a beautiful creature called plankton. A small, ocean creature that glows in the dark and to the flies, is like a mermaid. The Plankton and the flie fell in love. Eventually, their love created a new specious. Since their love for adventure and their love for eachother was beautiful and warm like a fire, they decided to call it a Fireflie." I told her, making up the story as I went along.
-
''Oh,'' Alianna mumbled, her eyes following the fireflies' light. ''What a nice story,'' Alianna yawned. Her eyes aching as she leaned against her brother. Eyes full of exhaustion, her body felt heavy as if she was drowning in water. She licked her lips, trying to stay conscious though, she fell into a blissful rest.
-
Shawn smiled and tried not to fall asleep. If someone came in and attacked them while they were sleeping, that wouldn't be good. However, they would probably wake up if that happened. And if he didn't sleep, Shawn would be too tired to protect Alianna. So he allowed himself to drift to sleep.

Branden had returned home, holding cans of beer as he called to his children, wondering where they had gone. The house was empty, no sign of his children in sight. His heart was racing, wondering if they had run away, leaving him to be all alone. Tears streaked his cheeks, as he called Noelle multiple times.
The ringing of her phone had erupted annoyance in her as she had almost finished eating dinner and chatting with the Dallace family. Noelle looked at the caller id number, her brows furrowed in surprised at Braden's number appearing. She ignored it once, then twice until the ringing distracted the family's time together.
Once outside, Noelle glanced inside the restaurant and answered the phone. ''N-Noelle!'' Braden croaked, her heart sinking at the desperation clear in his voice. ''Al-Alianna, S-Shawn! T-they're not here, or anywhere! Come quickly. God help me, please Noelle, we have to find our kids,'' He pleaded, as he choked on another incoming sob.
Noelle's eye was struck with fear, rushing inside, frantically fishing for her keys and the rest of her belongings. When asked to where she was going, all she replied with were angry mumbles. ''My kids, gone, missing, I have to find them,'' and ended with her driving past the speed limits and on the back streets to the small town that lay on the outskirts of the city.
This is where she was, Braden on the other side of town as he looked for his children. Noelle on the other, near the places they often visited together as a family, shouting their names at the top of her lungs. She didn't want to call the police right away, not unless she knows for sure she nor Braden couldn't find them. Her throat was dry from the yelling and screaming, she pushed her limits and continued her desperate pleas for them to shout in return. -
Andy felt terrible. He should have offered to help Noelle. He should have let Noelle go home earlier. It all happened so fast. He explained what happened to the kids, who looked concerned.
-
Noelle sighed, leaning back against her seat, the only place she hasn't checked was the park. There weren't many frequent visits to the park only during late spring or mid-winter. Those times were best to visit, perfect for the kids to play in the snow or to play with the other children. Noelle parked her car, stepping out of it. Her eyes clung to her jacket, the night's air was chilly and only brought tears to her eyes. ''Alianna, Shawn, my babies where are you?'' Noelle mumbled, loud enough for people close to hear.
Noelle staggered passed the park's gates, as she began walking to where she spotted few lingering fireflies. Their lights flickering as she heard a familiar faint snoring. ''Alianna,'' Noelle whispered, her heels digging into the dirt as she saw the two children, sleeping in each other's arms. Tears filled her eyes as the sight of them calmed her beating heart. ''My babies,'' She muffled her cry, hand over her lips as she didn't want to disturb their blissful sleep.
Instead, Noelle made a quick quiet call to Andy and then Braden, informing the two she had found Alianna and Shawn. She then allowed Alianna to rest on her lap, as she gently shook Shawn awake, incapable of caring both. ''Shawn, wake up,'' She whispered, remembering times when he was younger, waking him up early for school. -
Shawn blinked his eyes open and saw his mother. Multiple feelings bubbles up inside him. Anger at her for not being there, fear that he was in trouble for running away, sadness that he almost ran away, happiness that she was here now... Shawn felt overwhelmed and started crying, hugging his mother's leg. "I'm sorry mom... I'm sorry... Dad was drunk... Alianna was upset... I didn't know what to do... I was so angry... I wanted to take care of her,,, I wanted to be a good brother... Like in the books... I'm sorry... Please don't be mad,.," Shawn cried into her leg.
-
While he vented his feelings to Noelle, she combed her fingers through Shawn's hair. Her lips curved into a small guilty smile, as her eyes were glazed with the pity. ''Sweetheart, you are a good brother, a great son, I'm not mad, I could never be mad,'' Noelle mumbled, her voice low still not wanting to wake Alianna up. ''Don't be sorry, sweetheart, I'm sorry, for leaving you and Alianna, I'm very sorry,'' She gave Shawn's forehead a quick and gentle kiss. ''Let's get in the car and get you guys out of this cold, I'll make you some hot chocolate, put Alianna to bed and we'll talk,'' Noelle said, giving Shawn another kiss on the forehead.
-
"Okay." Shawn agreed, grabbing his back pack. "On the bright side, I know that if I run away again... I'm bringing more blankets." Shawn chuckled in a guilty manour, trying to lighten the mood a bit as he rolled up the cold blanket.
-
Noelle sent a firm glare towards Shawn's direction as she stood with Alianna in her arms. ''Don't even think about it mister, joke or not,'' Noelle said, biting her bottom lip. ''You really made me worry, you made me and your father worry,'' Noelle added, looking down at Alianna. ''Though there will be a little punishment for you and Alianna, I'll have to decide that with your father,'' Noelle said, as she came closer to the car. I should call Andy, tell him to come over to pick me up. I highly doubt Braden even wants me home Noelle thought as she opened the car door. She crawled into the backseat, laying Alianna down. ''Cover your sister with the blanket, please,'' She said, getting into the front seat to start the car back up,'' Noelle added, leaving the door open for Shawn.
-
Shawn nodded and got into the car. He would have stayed quiet, but he must have been becoming a teenager soon, because something made him say something he instantly regretted. "Isn't having to find a kid friendly way to explain to my sister why Mommy and Daddy suddenly disappeared on us enough punishment?" Shawn muttered, regretting his attitude instantly, but still meaning what he said.
