Nevaeh winced a bit when her ankle was touched, but gave Aniel a brilliant smile, shaking her head a little. "Oh, it's fine. And it seems that they did think the same.. Ten, huh? You're awful big for ten," She teased, "And, I'm twenty three. Old, huh? I thought fifteen was old when I was your age, though. What's your favorite color?" Nevaeh was pretty good with small talk, trying to avoid personal subjects such as family.
Her ankle was, in fact, pretty bad. Swollen and twisted at an odd angle. -
"Big? Well, I guess I just grow fast then." The boy shrugged and thought about the question that most humans could answer in a second. He didn't experience artificial colors, so he only knew of the nature around him. "There's a lake a ways away from here that turns a pretty greenish blue in the warm seasons. When the shines the most. That color is my favorite color. What about you?" He asked, tilting his head curiously.
The healer took the chance to straighten Nevaeh's foot while she was distracted with small talk, giving her an apology and spreading some kind of thick paste over the area. -
She had to pause, biting down hard on her lip at the pain, though it was quickly numbed. Inhaling, she responded. "I like the color that some leaves turn in the fall.. Almost that orange-red-yellow color that the sky turns at sunset," Nevaeh elaborated, frowning a little. "Thought, my sister in law, she had this dress the color of a clear sky.. It was so beautiful. That's probably my my second favorite color." Nevaeh had to go silent for a bit, thinking of a response. "Mm.. What's your favorite time of year?"
-
Rayne gave a sideways smile at the two while she used short, thick sticks and vines to keep the bones in place, wrapping the vines around the twigs from their set positions.
"I like those, too! Leaves are hard and crunchy when they're that color. And I like the warm season, it's hot and sunny, so we can go to the lake and swim. I like being in cold water when it's hot, but I don't like winter. It gets too cold then it's hard to go out and take baths because kids like me will freeze. The grown ups say we're too soft and thin-skinned." -
(I'm going to go swimming. Byyyye.)
"I like fall, that's the one with all the crunchy leaves," She laughed a little at his explanation. "I don't like it when it's too hot, though. Or too cold. Don't you have clothes for winter, though? Like.. Thicker shirts, and jackets made of stuff like.. Like.." Like wolf fur, Nevaeh had to stop herself from saying. -
(Okay bby. I'll be floating around.)
"Fall is right now then, right?" Aniel asked then shrugged at the question of clothing. "There are some things that mommas make to keep us pups warm, but we mostly just stay near them in the winter and share their heat. Grown ups have a lot of heat compared to us. They say our skin isn't tough enough to hold our own body heat yet. But it's nice being close to our mommas while our papas provide everything for us.." Aniel began to trail off, averting his eyes and staring into the distance -
"..My mom died when I was very little," Nevaeh said, softly, noticing that Aniel must have been thinking about similar things in his own life. "I was about three. And I went to live with my brother, his children, and his wife. When I was five, he.." She trailed for a moment, and then gave him a sad smile, "A monster killed them. All of them. And I went off to an orphanage for a while, and then I lived on my own. If I was like you, I probably would have been really cold."
-
Aniel blinked up at her, inching closer to look at her with wide eyes. "A monster..? What kind of monster?" He was more curious than ever to know about Nevaeh's life. The pup reached up to wipe his eyes before speaking again. "One of our gatherers said Hunter's took my momma. They didn't want to listen to her when she showed she didn't want to hurt them. Momma was getting food for me because my papa disappeared before my first change.."
-
Nevaeh bit her lip, staring at him. She wasn't lying as she told him, "Well, my brother.. He hid things that hurt his wife, so she killed herself, and he.. He lost it and killed his children, and.. Well, I killed him," She explained, sparing him the details. She sighed at the mention of hunters, shaking her head. "Sometimes, people do things they shouldn't. Ignorance is bred out of fear and hate. And there's a lot of hate between humans and your kind, Aniel. There's reasons behind them, but perhaps.. Perhaps some of them are wrong."
-
"I'm sorry. That sounds really scary.. I know humans don't like us. I don't know why, our clan has never bothered them. We've lived in this forest for as long as anyone can remember, just in different spots to make sure we're never found. And whenever Hunters come close, we move. But it's been good so far.." Aniel moved to rest his head in Nevaeh's lap, letting out a small yawn. "...I don't want to hate humans. I want to know them, and for them to know us. We do have to live together, but at least know not to fight each other.."
Rayne was going to make the boy move, and let the Hunter rest, but decided to wait for Nevaeh's reaction first. -
The hunter smiled, ruffling the pup's hair. "I wish it could be that way, too. But some people can't do that," She mumbled. I'm one of them, Nevaeh thought, but slowly, she was beginning to wonder if, perhaps, the beasts weren't as bad as she had originally thought. Still, she wasn't exactly sure, but only of one thing. This pup was perfectly innocent.
(So like, what happened to his dad?) -
He smiled at the touch to his messy hair, snuggling up to her even more for what warmth she had. "Maybe..one day.." Aniel drifted off, falling asleep in seconds. He was at ease, talking to someone that didn't entirely see him as just a pup.
Rayne hummed softly, staring the sleeping orphan. "My, he sure does like you. Not many people talk to him like that when he begins to tell people about his hopes and dreams. It's not like the majority of us don't share them, but we've just realized it will never happen so long as humans fear us. Too bad you'll be leaving once you can move. He'll miss talking to you."
(Nobody knows~) -
Nevaeh shrugged, stroking the pup's hair as the older woman spoke. "I don't think it's impossible. Just unlikely. Now, if you were all like him.." She trailed off, nodded at the mention of leaving once she could move. "I have to report to the king, after all. It seems that the werewolves have vanished completely from this forest," She said, a small smile touching her lips. She still didn't trust them in the least, but a slaughter would mean killing Aniel, and he wasn't deserving of that.
(Olan Roger in his imitation of his 14yo voice: DUUUUDE) -
"Well the boy who's leg your bear trap did a number on is exactly like this boy. Only, as I said, he's realized that such peace could never happen. Therefore he refuses to fight anyone, especially Hunters. Even when they put knives to his throat. That boy..won't fight unless there's something truly worth fighting for." The woman explained while making her way back to her own resting place. "You can stick around and learn a little, even teach a little. The kids love listening to new stories. And you're the first human we've encountered in a long time that hasn't attacked us. Even though I know you want to, you haven't. Anyway, please, make yourself comfortable. Relax and get some sleep."
-
Nevaeh nodded at the suggestion, falling silent. She knew she should have tried to get some rest, but the young hunter found herself staring at the ceiling, thinking until dawn. How many werewolves had she killed that had been just like this boy? Countless numbers, probably. Innocent beings who had just been born as something they had no say over. She still wasn't sure if she was completely wrong, but as she sat stroking the sleeping child's hair, she started to doubt herself.
