Lucas smiled happily and made a noise that sounded like a purr. In a lot of ways he really was more like a cat than a dog. He leaned into the woman's gentle petting, his tail wagging steadily back and forth.
-
Marco saw how the woman liked Lucas, and he was worried that Lucas would get adopted. If that happened, then the fox hybrid would have no one to talk to- no parents, no brother, no friend. He frowned, ate the last bite of his cookie, then reached out for Lucas' tail. It was waving back and forth, but he managed to grab the tip of it to hold it still and tug it slightly.
-
Lucas glanced over his shoulder when he felt something grabbing at his tail, halting it in its happy wagging. He realized with a start that being adopted would also mean having to leave Marco behind, and as much as he wanted a family, he didn't want to abandon the fox hybrid. He gave the woman another smile, but scooted back a bit, directing the now-reassuring smile towards Marco.
-
Marco let go of his tail, feeling better when Lucas gave him a smile. The woman watched curiously for a moment, before her husband urged her on to continue looking at more hybrids. They walked away, and Marco was alone with Lucas again. "Sorry.."
-
Lucas blinked, looking confused. "Sorry? What for? In all honesty I should be thanking you, because what if I was too nice and that lady wanted to adopt me? I mean, that would be amazing, but I'd have to leave you! And," He blushed slightly. "And I don't want to."
-
"Well, I thought you'd want to get adopted...," Marco murmured, though his cheeks were tinting pink. The woman had only moved two cages over with her husband, and so she was hearing every word. She knew her husband had heard, too, so she looked at him and pouted. He sighed, "Later. We'll come back tomorrow and check," he decided.
Marco was still blushing, and had shifted to sit cross-legged and pick at his socks. -
Lucas smiled slightly. When he spoke again it was quieter, he had noticed the woman listening. "I do. But I'd rather stay with you. You're the first person I've met who doesn't mind all my talking, and you're really nice, and it's interesting that you're a forest hybrid, and it's really cute how you're scared so easily, and you like cat food too, so..." He paused to take a breath. "So...I'd rather stay here."
-
Marco wasn't sure how to take compliments, especially because his brother never really gave him any. He'd never had any other hybrids as friends, so having Lucas was a new experience altogether. By the time the dog-hybrid had finished talking, Marco was fairly sure that he was flushed red. "Uhm, thank you," he said, voice a little higher than before.
-
Lucas laughed a little. "No problem, you've gone all red now though. Hasn't anyone ever told you all that before?" Lucas couldn't figure out why other people were so quiet. If he felt or thought something, he didn't see any reason not to say it.
-
Marco shook his head, "No, not really. Do you really think that?" His ears were up in interest, even though he was a little embarrassed. He wanted to know if Lucas really believed that being from the forest was cool, or that he was in any way, shape or form cute.
-
He laughed again and nodded. "Of course! I wouldn't lie to you, Marco. I think you're nice, and cute, and interesting, all of those things. And I'm surprised no one else has told you that. I'm sure they've thought it, it's just that not a lot of people say what they're thinking, but I'm sure they all think you're as great as I do."
-
Marco smiled, looking at Lucas shyly while he spoke. He kneeled up, getting close and hugging him tight. "You're really nice. And I don't mind you talking at all, I like it."
-
Lucas was a little shocked for a moment. Marco wasn't the kind of person he would expect a hug from, and in all honesty Lucas hadn't really done much hugging in his life. He'd spent most of his time in a cage, and the only physical touch he was used to were pats from through the bars. However, he quickly realized he had to do something, and he wrapped his arms around Marco, blushing. He nuzzled into his hair and smiled. "I'm glad you like it."
-
Marco kept hugging him for a minute, deciding he liked the comfy position and how natural it felt. He let go, finally, slinking away to his blanket to lay down.
-
For once, the dog hybrid was at a loss for words. His face was still flushed slightly red, and he was still smiling as he laid down beside Marco in his own bed. The light outside the shop was beginning to grow dimmed, which surprised Lucas. With Marco there, the day had seemed to go by much faster.
