The father peered down at Marco and raised an eyebrow, surprised to see a fox among so many domestic hybrids. "Maybe he's just shy." He offered, before straightening up to wonder what his wife was going to buy now.
"Come on," Lucas urged, smiling encouragingly at Marco. "She won't bite, I promise." He said with a little laugh. -
Marco stared at the girl, gauging the likelihood that she'd pull his ear. Considering she's already done it before, he wasn't so sure that she wouldn't do it now. But, she seemed pretty dissapointed, so he inched closer until he was in her reach. Just as soon as he was, the girl snatched his ear, holding it with a slightly painful grasp. "I want these ones, daddy. They're Princess, and... Fox."
-
"Not so hard," Lucas gently tapped the girl's wrist, reminding her to be gentle. Her father leaned down, examining the two hybrids more like objects then living things. Lucas had to admit it made him a little anxious.
Do you want them to get adopted or no) -
Marco breathed, a little relieved when she let go of his ear and instead started patting his hair down. "Do you talk too, Fox?" She asked, seeming to be excited at the idea. By the way the man was looking at him, he'd think he was looking for an indication that he wasn't worthy of adoption. And by no means did Marco plan on leaving before his brother was found. He ignored the girl's question, as if he hadn't heard her.
(I think they should stay at the shelter for a little while maybe) -
okie)
The man frowned at Marco's reluctance to speak. "Let's find you a nicer pet, okay sweetie?" He asked the little girl. "Maybe something small." He added, eyeing the large cage that housed Lucas and Marco. His ears dropped slightly, but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to. Maybe next time. -
The girl was hesitant, but she sighed and pulled her hands away from Marco and Lucas. "Okay. Bye, doggy and fox," she waved, then started walking away with her father once again. Marco sighed in relief that they didn't like him, and his ears finally went back upright in a comfortable position.
-
Lucas sighed and waved back to the little girl. "I love kids," he said with a little smile. "They're so cute and funny, and they think they know everything, even though they don't, and-" He realized he was rambling again. "...Sorry. Am I bothering you? Some people say I talk to much."
-
Marco looked over at Lucas, listening to him. It wasn't like when his brother spoke; when his brother was trying to tell him something, Marco knew he better pay attention or he'd be in trouble. But Lucas was, firecracker dog as he was, not as demanding. He seemed nicer. "No. It's okay."
-
Lucas smiled happily. "See, I've been here for a long time, but you're the first person I've met who wasn't bothered by all my talking. I don't mean to, it's just that there's so much to say, although you don't seem to think so, you're very quiet..."
-
Marco puffed up his cheeks, a little embarrassed by this comment. He didn't mean to be quiet. If anything, his brother had always said he was too jittery, too on edge all of the time, and so he was always going "what's that", or "brother someone's there".
"I'm not meaning to be," Marco finally said. "There just isn't much to talk about here." -
-
Lucas tilted his head and studied him. "Sure there is. There's lots you could talk about. Like what about your brother? What's he like? And what was it like living in the forest?"
-
Marco shrugged, hearing the door to the shelter open again. He frowned, seeing a group of three teenage girls walk in, who were talking much louder than they needed. They rushed to the kittens, like they'd been at the same shop before to do the same thing. "My brother? His name is Lazlo and he always says he hates his name but he never tries to change it, and I guess it's okay, because there are campers who leave their stuff out all the time."
-
Lucas's ears twitched in annoyance when the girls entered. He didn't understand why they had to yell when they were right next to each other. Doing his best to ignore them, he focused back on Marco. "So you had to steal?" He didn't sound angry or upset, more sympathetic. He could only imagine how it must've been having to take all their food from other people. "Was it hard? Did you ever get caught?"
-
Marco shifted, so that he was sitting cross-legged. This way, he could reach down to his boots, and scrape away dirt with his thumbs. "Yah... Sort of. Sometimes they'd chase us but--" he glanced around, then whispered like he was worried someone would hear him. "I think the guys with the guns who catch hybrids caught my brother. That's why I got lost."
The girls wandered away from each other, and even though they were on opposite ends of the shop, they kept yelling to each other about how cute the kittens were, or how fluffy the dogs.
