A soft rattling sound woke Lucas. His ears perked up and twitched as he looked over at the door in surprise. Who would ever come here this early? Through the glass, he could make out the shape of a human. For a moment, Lucas was alarmed, thinking it was a robber. However, further inspection revealed two ears and a tail on the silhouette.
Lucas sat up and glanced at the stairs behind the checkout counter. The owners had a small apartment above the shelter, and the female was usually awake with the sun. "Hey!" He called out. "Hey, someone's here!" A minute later, the woman appeared, glaring at Lucas. "Shh!" She held a finger to her lips as she walked over to the door. Her eyes widened as she unlocked it. "A fox..?" The door swung open and the woman stared down at the unusual forest hybrid. -
Marcus stared back at the woman, who seemed just as interested in him as he was in her. The hybrids inside the shelter seemed to be content enough, and she'd shown no signs of being mean. His ears flattened against his hair, one foot stepping nervously on his other boot. "Ehm... Hi, I'm cold." He said, condensing his greeting and explanation of needs in one simple sentence.
-
The woman gestured for him to follow her inside with a kind smile. "So tell me, how did a hybrid like you end up so far from the forest?" She asked, as she pulled out a blanket and grabbed an apple out of the closet, holding both out to him before going and shutting the door against the cold.
Lucas kept his face pressed up to the side of his cage, watching the fox boy with wide eyes. He'd never seen anything like it. Only dogs like himself, cats, and the occasional rodent hybrid. Lucas was one of the few at the shelter who was awake, and he was much more intruigued than the two rabbit hybrids, who glanced at the newcomer lazily, looking uninterested. -
Marcus held the blanket tight around himself with one hand, the other holding the apple. He'd never very much liked them, but, it was better than nothing. If anything, he preferred stealing cat food from campers. He bit into the fruit, wrinkling his nose but swallowing it down.
Suddenly, he felt like the lady would turn him in to the hybrid control men with the guns if he told her he was one of the trouble-making hybrids from the nearest forest. "I'm lost," he said. But then, thinking this might incite the lady to find his owner, he added innocently, "my owner, he forgot me in a box. But he just forgot me, so I was looking for him, but I'm lost." This, he figured, would keep the woman from turning him in or looking for an owner. -
The woman gave him a sympathetic look, and smiled slightly when she saw his expression after biting into the apple. "We have other food too, if there's something else you'd like. You're more than welcome to stay here in the shop, there's more than enough room with Lucas."
The dog-hybrid perked up at the sound of his name, smiling at the fox-boy who still hadn't given a name. Lucas wondered if he had one, knowing that forest hybrids weren't supposed to be as civilized as others. His cage was definitely big enough for two, and it would be interesting sharing with a forest hybrid. That is, if he even agreed to stay. -
Marco's ears perked up, shifting his balance between his feet. "Well, well, but I've got to find my brother, because he's lost too, but I don't know where he went," he explained. Even though the woman was welcoming, he was terribly nervous in this unfamiliar place, asking for help from a human.
Like the thing was on fire, he dropped the apple. "Cat food?" He asked urgently, being as he hadn't had his favorite food in a while. -
The woman turned back to the cabinet and pulled out a bag of cat food. As poured some into a bowl and handed it to the fox-hybrid. "Well how about you stay here for now? My son is always around the city looking for stray hybrids, so I'll ask him to look for your brother, okay?"
Lucas was still watching the fox, grinning delightedly when he asked for cat food. The dog-hybrid secretly enjoyed it too, and sometimes he would reach into the next cage and steal some from the cat-hybrids there. -
Marco held the bowl, looking down at the food in thought. Originally, he'd only planned to stay here long enough to steal some food and a blanket. But, maybe, if the lady's son found his brother, he could just wait here. He nodded slowly, sitting down on the ground with his legs out in front of him. "Yah, okay." He set the bowl between his thighs, picking up a few pieces of the cat food and popping them in his mouth like popcorn.
-
The woman nodded. "Alright. If you'll excuse me, I have to go tidy up some things upstairs. There's more blankets and food in the cabinet. I'm afraid you'll have to get into one of the cages one the customers start coming, but I'll make sure they know you're not for sale." With that, the woman exited back up the stairs. As soon as she was gone, Lucas piped up. "Hi!"
-
Marco ate while she talked, pretty much dismissing her because of the food in his mouth. He chewed it slowly, until some god-awful thing yelped out a 'hi' at him. He almost choked, but managed to swallow down what was in his mouth. After recovering for a few seconds from his near-death experience, he turned his head to look at the hybrid that'd spoken.
His ears flattened again, staring at the dog hybrid that very much resembled a firecracker with a lit fuse, about to go off if enticed. "Uhm... Hi," he mumbled, taking note of the fact that all of the hybrids were kept in cages here. He wasn't sure how he felt about that. -
Lucas smiled when he replied. "What's your name? I'm Lucas! I've never seen a fox-hybrid before. Did you used to live in the woods?" Lucas popped question after question, before realize he was probably being too loud, asking too much. He promptly fell silent, although he continued to look curiously at the other boy.
-
Marco felt a little more nervous, so he turned back to his food, staring down at it while he answered. "I'm Marco. Uhm, yah, yah, I did, but don't tell the lady, because there are guys looking for me, okay?" He picked up some more little nibbles of cat food to pop in his mouth.
-
Lucas nodded quickly and smiled. "Okay, I won't say anything. Are you hurt at all? The nice lady is good at taking care of stuff like that too." He explained, tilting his head to watch the boy.
-
Marco's tail was twitching, sweeping back and forth across the ground. He was really a lot like his animal counterpart- he was made up of ninety percent nerves, and anything could scare him. "No," he said, shaking his head. He saw, out the window, that the streets had come to life, teeming with people. A man and a woman, along with a little girl, hurried up to the door, knocking when they found it locked.
-
The woman hurried back down the stairs again, followed by a man, and a boy who looked about eighteen. The boy called something to the man before heading out the door, holding it to allow the family inside. The woman smiled at Maroc and silently gestured towards Lucas's cage. The man grinned and welcomed the family.
